Ringtone notification

I just got an EVO with no instructions and can't figure out how to apply a custom ringtone to email notifications and things like that. I can eaisly apply a custom ringtone to my contacts but when I try to assign one to an email account or text message they don't show up as being able to use. I can only see the preloaded tones for email, and text messaging.. Is there a way to do this?
