Rolled back to Pie from Q Beta 2...what a nightmare

Well, I just had too many issues with Beta 2 that I rolled back to Pie. Its been a long time since I factory reset a phone and I completely effed up my backup situation.

I failed to realize every time I got a new phone, I had my old phone right there I could swap everything over from. I did not backup everything I needed.

It took me 5 hours last night to find everything that was not downloaded or set up properly. Only thing I did backup before I reset was my Nova and Contacts. I completely lost my audio folder(found a backup folder from my nexus 6p). I lost all the photos I had downloaded(not in my actual photos app).

I forgot about half of my logins and got locked out of some of those. And Im surprised that none of my text messages repopulated, even though they are supposedly backed up by Google.

Ugh, this is just a fair warning to anyone who is going to factory reset their phone, backup everything! And it does not take only 30 minutes....

I didn't want to deal with the issues so I went back to Pie. I might check out Q again when Beta 3 comes out.

I am with you on this one. I found about 1/2 of my apps and many essential Android features would either crash or just not work-including the error reporting app. This surprised me as I have participated in many Beta programs on iPhone, Mac OS, Windows.... with only minor issues that I either waited out or ignored. The Q beta interrupted so many basic services that I ended up reinstalling Pie. Fortunately I heeded the warnings and other than 90 minutes of my time, lost nothing, but this Beta is not for the feint of heart!

One area that iOS is better than Android is the Phone backup and how easy it is to restore from a snapshot state.

While that may be true it doesn't help roll back from Q beta

True, but if a similar backup system were in place TC's issues related to reverting back, factory reset could be restored from the moment right before Q update, essentially make the rollback experience very user friendly.

My Samsung phones are easy to restore and probably better then my iPhone, Google,1+6 are little behind the ball in this department.

Jumping back in to this to say if I had done it right, the restore wouldnt have been as bad. The only thing Im curious about is why, when I checked I had a full backup complete, my SMS didnt restore properly.

Again, I havent done a factory reset since the Nexus days, and I always backed up my phone to my laptop before I did it. I forgot to do it on the Pixel and didnt realize the stuff that wouldnt carry over if I hadnt.

Moving from old phone to new phone(when new Pixels arrive on doorstep) is one of the easiest and painless things Ive ever had to do though. Much better on the Pixels than on the Nexus phones.

I went back to Android 9 and it took a couple of hours but was far from a nightmare. My sounds are from a third-party app because I'm hard of hearing and want loud sounds. Those sounds I had to download again. My photos, apps, email, and so forth all came back nicely. I will admit I didn't sit down and go through all my apps and sign in to the various sites. I do that as I visit them over a couple of days.

It's hard to get a definitive answer about what Google backs up: in one place I read that they only backup 25MB of application data; in another I read that it was only 90 days of messaging. In any case they only back up SMS (no MMS), so that may throw a monkey wrench into the works.
I always recommend using SMS Backup & Restore Pro https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.riteshsahu.SMSBackupRestorePro - I've been using that for years and have never had a problem.
