Is it possible to root my droid and put sense UI on it? Should I wait to root until after I get (or manually install) 2.1?

afaik, the 2.1 update on the droid isn't rooted yet so you'd need to SBF back to 2.0.1 in order to root. If you're looking for rooted 2.1, you'll need to load one of the custom roms. You can't just load up senseUI on the droid so you have to wait until a rom gets ported. There are some guys over at alldroid working on getting 2.1 with SenseUI ported from the HTC Desire. It works but is in alpha so it's a little buggy.

Apparently you don't read the first page before posting:

Did this using this guide:
[Release] 2.0.1 stock to 2.1 with root!!

Need to be 2.0.1 first though so sbf back then root or just use my nandroid backup ;)

I was referring to the 2.1 update that verizon released, so if you got the update from verizon you have to backtrack. Not sure why anyone would want regular 2.1 and not just go with one of custom roms.
