New to android and I'd like to root, but I'm not sure where to get good info and step by step instructions. I've done some searching for how to do this on the 4.4.4 and I've only found a few methods that seemed a bit sketchy. I'm gathering all the info I can before I even start to fiddle with it, so any help would be great. Thanks

Thanks Rukbat. Does this seem legit? Found on YouTube and since I can't yet post links the title is:
Root Samsung Galaxy S4 4.4.4 (AT&T)

This worked just fine. Only thing I'm not sure about is, when I reboot it has a screen with a unlocked padlock with the words custom under it. Is this normal?

Yes. It means your device has been modified (which is what the root is). If your device was on 4.3 or later prior to rooting, you won't be able to reset the flash counter to 0 (not modified status).

I have that as well, and when booting up I get a message in the top left saying my kernel is not SE Android enforcing. Damn Knox...

Sent from my Galaxy S4 running Lollipop 5.0.2

Trying to get into backup and recovery mode by pressing vol up/home/power together, but after the samsung and unlocked padlock screen comes up and the blue recovery text appears in the upper left side of sceen, when I release the buttons, nothing happens and the recovery text goes away without it going into backup recovery mode. Any ideas?

Have you tried holding the buttons until it actually gets into recovery? You're still using the stock recovery, right?
