Depends on which variant. The US carrier or Amazon models, no root at this point and it's highly unlikely for the future because it would require finding a security hole to allow root.
The US997 and H870 models can have their bootloaders unlocked, which allows you to load a tool like TWRP and subsequently root (TWRP does not imply installing a custom ROM although it would allow you to do so).
Just google for Lg G6 bootloader unlock and check out the info on XDA Developers if you want to proceed.
I would say, though, in this day and age, rooting is not as important as it used to be as far as getting the full use of your phone. If you're new to Android you might just want to hold off a while unless the whole point of the phone for you is to play with this kind of thing. There are a few minor things requiring root that I wish I could do, but I'm getting by ok without it.
