Root? New to android but tech savvy

Hey. So switched from Windows Phone to G6.

Now id like to Root it. No clue where to start. I don't want a ROM. Just root.

Depends on which variant. The US carrier or Amazon models, no root at this point and it's highly unlikely for the future because it would require finding a security hole to allow root.

The US997 and H870 models can have their bootloaders unlocked, which allows you to load a tool like TWRP and subsequently root (TWRP does not imply installing a custom ROM although it would allow you to do so).

Just google for Lg G6 bootloader unlock and check out the info on XDA Developers if you want to proceed.

I would say, though, in this day and age, rooting is not as important as it used to be as far as getting the full use of your phone. If you're new to Android you might just want to hold off a while unless the whole point of the phone for you is to play with this kind of thing. There are a few minor things requiring root that I wish I could do, but I'm getting by ok without it.

Note that rooting also opens up security holes in your phone. Even if you are tech savvy, unless you're experienced using Android and all its quirks, and you have a specific reason to need root, I'd really advise against it at this point.

I used to root all my Android devices but never needed or bothered to anymore after using Android 6.

I enjoy experimenting with unofficial apps and GUI tweaks etc. It would be easier than always tweaking with ADB

If it's just that, I'd advise you to get familiar with the device first and officially available apps that don't need root. Then read up a lot to the point that you don't need to ask questions on how to root. Learning to root is not too hard, just need the right resources. Head over to the XDA forums as that's the best place for rooting, custom ROMs and the safest source for apps not found on the Play Store. People there can be a bit rude though and tend to not answer questions from complete novices. They do answer questions about clarifications on the rooting process though.

The forum for the specific model of your phone would also list the best rooting process for your particular model and regional variant.

The easiest way to get root without reading anything is just get a one click root option like Kingo. But again I'd advice against this unless you know more about the system, because once rooted and you screw something up, you may lose everything or turn your phone into a brick.

I appreciate your help. I'm not new to the process. Just new to Android. I've already went through XDA and only see ROMs but nothing for my variant. I did see One-click but I'd rather not pay. Thanks for your time!

Some models don't have an actual root process but you have to flash a rooted ROM. So you may have to look for that.
