Root now or wait for official ICS?

Hey guys,

I just got my Rezound. I have rooted and used customer Roms in the past but the Rom installing all the time got kind of annoying. I am thinking of rooting just to get rid of the bloatware (and then of course try out new Roms even though I'm trying no to).

Does anyone know or reccomend if I root now, will I still recieve the OTA update to ICS or if I should wait until after and wait for someone to root that?

Couldn't find anything specific out there, thanks for any help.

You can root now and upgrade to a leaked, debloated release of ICS if you want. I'm currently on Scroslers CleanROM 2.3 ICS edition. There's a newer version out there too from the very latest ICS leak for the Rezound.

There are also a wealth of ICS ROMs available for the Rezound over at xda developers, but many of them do not have full functionality. Scrosler's work is as close to complete and functioning as a developer can get, not serious issues. I'd honestly suggest his ROM's over anything else at this point in time. Plus, with the ROMs being debloated you have better battery life, less background data usage etc.

I'm in the same boat. I just got my rezound yesterday, and plan on waiting about a week or so at least before I root in case I need to return it. But trying to decide if I am going to root now, or after the update, whenever that is.

If you root and install a rom, then you would probably have to manually install a rom that included the ota update. i would advise against even trying to get the OTA when rooted.

FYI, you can get ICS and debloat by installing the leaked ICS, which doesn't require root, but you may have to manually install the ota if the ota happened to be different than the leaked ics.

I have been wondering, is there a plain jane ICS ROM of the Rezound. I mean no Sense or anything just base 4.0.

I am in more or less the same boat. This is my first android though, so I am going to stay stock till a stable ics is officially updated. Unless of course I can be convinced otherwise or it looks like ota will be months and months. With the last leak I was really thinking would be very soon, but I am thinking it will be a while more and more ics makes its way on over

I have rooted but i'm still stuck in the stone age with the cleanrom 1.7.0.(GB) I'm trying to wait until the offical release as rumor as it it'll be with sense 4.0

i rooted awhile ago and debloated but i am pretty happy with the OS right now. I am patiently waiting for the official ICS to come out and then a few weeks until the ROM i want based on that is released. Then I'll ROM it up. I'd rather just do it one and done if possible.

I unlocked, rooted and have tried all of Scott's CleanROMs and they are very good. Minor issues. I'm sure that once the official ICS is released Scott will put together a new CleanROM that will be flawless.

Any issues, things not working that sorta thing?

Some had reported a loss of bluetooth functionality for streaming audio. I didn't experience that on either of Scott's ROMs, though I did on others.

Not sure if it's still an annoyance, but when initially turning the phone on or after a reboot system UI would force close once, and be fine after that.

Not much else that isn't present in other ICS ROMs, the occasional blue flicker on the screen. I actually have yet to experience that with CleanROM2.3 ICS (4.0.1 not the newer 4.1).

Both ROMs have threads in the dev section up above, but you'll have to do a bit of digging to find the senseless ICS thread.

If you have time and interest to mess around with your phone then root. If not, then don't.

I find myself in the same dilemma, to root or not to root before the official update...these are my thoughts so far:

1. Arguments for doing it right now: I'd definitely like to get ICS as soon as possible. I have the leak on my computer ready to install on the SD card of my Rez. I have been following the forums, here and elsewhere, to better acquaint myself with +/-. So far I've read about battery and overheating issues that cause me some concern. On the positive side you get ICS and you're able to debloat (some, maybe not all).

2. Arguments to wait: I imagine that the official OTA will be throughly tested and not have the battery/heating issues. I am worried though that VZW will remove the ability to debloat on the official version.

I'm pretty sure that either way I will end up rooting for as much as I like some features of Sense it doesn't offer me enough personalization/control of my phone environment. I'm bone stock right now.

Thanks for allowing me to share my $.02 :p

ummm.... 2...may be, maybe not. The mr1 update on the thunderbolt had known data connection issues but was still ota. The original gb update had the known vm notification issue but was still released, then withdrawn. These were not sporadic issues, a lot of people running it before it went ota complained, but it was still ota.

There are ICS ROMs out there which are stable and probably similar to what you'll get in the OTA, only they're already debloated. See Scrosler's work in the rooting and roms section on this board.

Personal Update: I went ahead rooted and froze apps I didn't want via Titanium Backup. Working great! I'm going to wait for OTA and let others update with root and see what happens.

(In response, I've flashed ROMS since Eris, just always a repetitive process that I want to avoid this go around, always waiting for the next one, always small issues like fc at start up the promise the next rom won't, stuff like that, but there's another thread for that convo).

Thanks for all the help, looking forward to seeing your posts in the Rezound area.

I just dislike all the people who say your phone sucks... but haven't seen one in the wild nor really played with it.

I was in the same boat, but decided to root because I wanted the wifi hotspot and to freeze some apps. That was basically it. I wasn't that interested in trying out ROMs as I don't like having to reorganize all my stuff over and over again. When the last OTA update came for the Rezound, I was worried I couldn't accept, but luckily there was a lot of info on what to do in my case and I think the same will hold true for when ICS comes out. You basically will have to unfreeze the bloat apps. Then I used Voodoo OTA RootKeeper to temp unroot, but keeps a back up of it. Then I accepted the OTA, and re-rooted with OTA RootKeeper and then just had to freeze the bloat again. Pretty easily and painless. If you're going to be running a custom ROM then this won't work for you. But if you're keeping it stock like I am, then I'm guessing we'll be good to go when ICS comes out.
