100% stock - do I need to be rooted to get Gingerbread?
Does anyone have the link to OTA?
Also the link to one click root or is there an easier method?

You do need to be rooted to flash gbread. This is the leak though. you also need to be on .340 There is also a prerooted gbread leak available. As for rooting... Search the forums for an app called z4root. One click root application

I would research before installing because the method is different than the normal installation process and if you don't follow instructions exact you may have issues.

That's good advice you're giving him, and it will lead to him being rooted with a form of OTA Gingerbread installed. There is at least one rom though (Liberty) which has Gingerbread, and he may want to consider having a GB custom rom, as opposed to "stock Gingerbread", as it were. There are pros and cons to having the GB rom - the pros being the increased functionality that the rom has, as opposed to the OTA stock version, but the plus factor to the OTA stock version is that you can still (I believe) receive future OTA updates if you're using that and you won't be able to if you're running a custom Gingerbread rom.

Things to consider...
