Hi all. I am (still) thinking about rooting my phone.
but i am still left with one question.
if i root my phone and a update comes , i know i have to update via odin. But Will i keep all my data and files if i update via odin ? I know i lose root if i update.

I am familiar with rooting but this is one think i never knew.

Not thinking about flashing custom rom tough its perfect as it is

hmm.. i dont think its worth it then to root the phone.
i tought maybe there is some kind of update you can choose in odin so you wont have to personalize the phone each and every time there is an update

I rooted my phone with Odin 3.09 and didn't loose anything. It booted up as though nothing had changed, except the SuperSU was working just fine.

You wont lose anything. I am not sure what happens if you go from 4.4.4 to lollipop.
In the past i had the note 3 and i rooted it. When there was a new firmware i just updated it through Odin. I never wiped cache or never did a master reset. If it is the stockrom than you dont need to worry but of it is a customrom than you need to do a backup first and than restore the backup.

As far as I know, you don't lose any apps or data when you update your firmware with Odin assuming you're just using a rooted stock rom. If you're planning to use a custom rom then all bets are off. At least that was my experience with my S3.

As far as updates go, no. You can't update but the only updates coming soon are 5.0 and 5. Whatever else. I'm not planning on updating until the bugs are worked out in 5. Kit Kat is doing everything just fine.

FYI, here's what you get when you check for an update...

Now, from what I've read, if/when you want to unroot for Lollypop update, assuming you want to do it thru your carrier, I do think it reloads to factory image and then you will loose your stuff.

Thanks for the info! I think il wait for the lollipop update and then root it. I gues minor updates wont make me lose data

I rooted using Odin 3.07. Any is fine, as long as u follow all steps, and leave 're-partition' unchecked. There is no such thing as update in Odin. You can flash ROM's, or u can get OTA updates via the air. As long as ur running stock android.

Okay. But if I'm rooted I can't get ota's.. I need to know if there is a way to update when there is an update without loosing all my settings and apps

If you keep your stock recovery you should be able to receive ota updates on root, and keep your data.👽

That's awesome. But cf autoroot installs clockworkmod instantly right? Correct me if I'm wrong but that always happened on my s3

Are you rooted?

I believe you can flash a stock recovery with oden. I haven't tried to root just yet.
