Is there any way to root the NS4G with GB without wiping the phone. I don't want to have to rebuild it again (an all day process).

There might be an exploit that allows for a temporary unlock, a temporary recovery boot, and a flash of the superuser package. Past that, I have no idea.

Rooting isn't the issue as far as the need to wipe, it's unlocking the boot loader than requires a wipe.

OK - in order to root, you must first unlock the boot loader, so you wind up in the same place. Do I have that right?

There is no way to root the phone without previously unlocking the bootloader which wipes the device. Once the bootloader is unlocked and left unlocked you can do whatever you please... Leave it stock, run custom ROMs... flash a custom recovery, leave the stock recovery....
