Hot to root ZTE MERIT Z990g

Any luck with rooting the Merit? I've been trying for over a month. I think part of MY problem is that I'm not familiar with the terminology. The instructions by jdcase are precise and supposedly work, but I have NO IDEA how to even start typing in those commands.
