rooted droid plugged in slide out keyboard touch screen stops working

i have been doing some research and maybe i missed the thread but here is my exact issue.

i bought this phone for parts but decided to see what is wrong with it. it is rooted. the touch screen works fine when i first turn it on. if i let is sleep for a few minutes and i try to wake it up the screen is unresponsive.

also when i plug it in and slide out the keyboard, the touch capabilities cease to work.

any ideas what is wrong? it will work if i remove the battery and power on the phone. could this be the digitizer?
