So, after talking to my friend with an EVO, I decided to root my Incredible. I came on here and read loads of articles and here is what I did.
Rooted with unrevoked3
HBOOT->recovery then in the clockworkmod screen backup and restore-> backup...I missed the screen title last night and just saw it labeled Nandroid, which answers one question I had of "is that the nandroid backup".

Now, flashing ROMs, running kernels, I haven't really been able to find a place that really explains that very well. From what I understand ROMs are essentially new user interfaces? (like HTC sense) and Kernels are apps or something that run within the ROM? Also when I find ROM i like, when I want to use it, do I need to wipe everything off my phone, then install the ROM and then restore? Just haven't been able to really pinpoint the process. I have tried searching but I guess I'm not putting in the right terms or something because I have had little luck. I switched from a Blackberry Bold so if you know BB-esque lingo that would help. Also I don't expect someone to write up how to do it, maybe if someone could just point me to a post or something that would answer my questions. Thanks

Flashing ROM's is actually pretty easy. However, before you do so, always do a nandroid backup (reboot to recovery and do a system backup) in case something goes wrong. Also, wipe the system before installing a new ROM. I recommend downloading Titanium Backup from the market and using that as your backup tool in addition to nandroid (nandroid backup creates a system image, meaning if you try to restore with that, it will revert back to your old ROM. Titanium backs up your applications and data). It'll make restoring your apps and such pretty easy when you flash a ROM, although I recommend restoring apps one at a time in case one doesn't get along with your ROM.

Ah, ok. Yes I forgot to mention I did get Titanium Backup to get rid of the bloatware and was looking at backing up with that as well. So it seems to be relatively the same process as a blackberry then... Backup-wipe-install-restore. Thanks!

Hello. I'm new to Android devices, software and the website. Trying to get the right info, so I don't brick my phone. I rooted my phone with Unrevoked3, which was pretty easy and straight forward. Now I'm trying to flash a Rom. I did a Nandroid backup and I'm now in the process of backing up apps with Titanium. My question is, am I backing up all the apps on the phone or just the ones I downloaded from the Market?

I have been running into some trouble when trying to flash a new ROM...I am trying to install "senseless" and it works fine when i flash it, then when i restore all of my apps I lose the messages app (which was there when i initially flashed the ROM). I backed it up with everything and I am just not sure where it is going....any ideas? I used my nandroid backup to restore with and then with titanium backup i restored all the apps and data hoping it would work that way...no go. Any ideas?

You have to be careful when restore apps data to different Rom if you going from a Sense to vanilla you probably shouldn't restore any data just the apps. Try flashing the Rom again and only restore the apps without data and should be good to go.
