OK went from ZVD to a rooted ZVD, but everything is pretty much the same.
What is the reason most people root. the only thing I have been able to do so far that matters:

Freeze apps(with titanium)
Uninstall some system apps

What is the best ROM that will improve the experience I already have, does it give better speed? Battery Life? Adobe Flash would be nice...

Also is there a list of system apps that can be removed safely, seems there are a bunch that should go, I always only seem to have about 20MB of space left on my damn device. so if root can help me recapture a crap load of space let me know what is best for this.

Being rooted allows you to use different ROMs and those will give a lot of storage space on your phone.

I can't answer you on which ROM is the best as it's all a matter of preference. Most ROMs improve speed and battery life. You'll have to visit the Rooting section of this forum to learn more about it.

EDIT: Titanium Backup also lets you move any app onto your SD card. So if you have some large apps, it'll help a lot.

Flash a custom ROM to regain some space that the cache wastes. System apps do not take up "usable space" since they are located on their own SYSTEM partition which in my case has about 40MB free.
Another thing you can do to regain space is to integrate any system app updates using Titanium.

Rooting only gives you the power to do much more, such as:

Flashing a different kernel, to overclock your processor.

Flashing a custom ROM to reduce bloat and battery drain, if configured right. This one, you just need to try out as different ROM's give you different things.

Flash custom themes.

Flashing a custom recovery, to make backups of your device. For those sticky situations where you have played a little further than your intelligence goes, and muck up your phone.

Use apps that require root to perform powerful tasks, such as previously mentioned titanium backup.

Rooting gives you the key and unlocks the door, its up to you to go through and decide where to go.

I mainly rooted for one reason, To shut the sound off on the dang camera.

Download Estrongs file explorer (free) from market. Give it Root access in settings. navigate to /system/media/audio/ui/ and rename camera_snapshot.ogg to camera_snapshot.ogg.bak and then when you take pics there won't be any shutter sound.
Also do it to VideoRecord.ogg.

But the curious minds will plunder further into the Oid. :)

since your new to rooting your phone..(person who started thread.) remove/add what you want..make your phone the way YOU want. (at your own risk) ...like the above posts..roms, themes, etc...

alot of peeps root to get rid of sprint-bloat-ware...etc..etc..however like most of the threads, post on the first post is beware- you can brick your phone and those (devs, posters, etc) dont have responsibility of what happens to your phone..

so if your wanting to get rid of system apps etc..read up on what you can delete or shouldnt. ..a nice app to use would be ROOT Explorer. ($) (can get into system files, etc.)

another is a cache cleaner..there are a few threads about that. some are free some arnt.

basically there is so much that can be done with a rooted phone..as you can tell from the posts already everyone has a lot to say..so as much as it may kill some people..(kills me sometimes reading a ****load of whats in the forums..)just run through the forum...use search. and see what people are doing to their rooted phones , etc.

If I try a new ROM does it wipe everything and start new, because when I went from ZVD, to ZV9 rooted and back to ZVD it kept pretty much everything in tact.

was wondering about if that is the case with any custom Roms, I want to try ThundeRom and Cyanogenmod if I get the courage.

I'm with you thread starter. I rooted over the weekend and really don't see any difference. I'm using ThundeROM and if you read the forum, you'd think it was the next best thing since sliced bread.

Rooting by itself does nothing to improve your phone.

It's not going to improve performance, battery life or anything else. It just gives you permission to do things that you otherwise would not be able to do.

After you root (which means you gain root access to your device's file system) you can then do things that you otherwise wouldn't be able to. Some common things people do:
-remove pre-loaded apps that you don't use thus freeing up space on the device
-load a custom recovery that allows you to back up your device and load different system images (i.e. ROMS)
-load a new ROM that gives you more space then stock, adds a few tweaks (like allowing wireless tether), allows you to run a new kernel so you can overclock or underclock, etc.
-load a new theme to change the looks of the device
-run various apps that require root (go to the market and search for root to see some examples)

That's just some of the stuff you can do.

Not sure why you'd bother rooting your phone if you don't have a reason. Here's why I did... I needed more space on my phone because I've got a few apps that are space hogs. I wanted a way to backup a known good configuration of my phone. I liked the visuals and some of the tweaks available in ThunderRom.
