I just rooted my samsung fascinate and was wondering what to do next. I thought I would be able to download apps for free now? Is there any thing interesting to do with a rooted fascinate?

Rooting just gives you "super user" access to the phone. Think of it like having the admin account on a PC and before rooting you where just on a guest account.
You can't get free apps just from rooting... what you can do is install or remove apps that you couldn't before or install custom ROMs/Themes that make the Fascinate even more Fascinating
. Look at flashing to Froyo and SuperClean 2.9.x... you wont look back... haven't yet.
Welcome to Android Central, I am glad you have successfully rooted.
Since you can get free apps without rooting i must assume you are refering to pirated apps. But here at Android Central we do not advocate pirated apps as each developer has spent time and effort creating apps and purchasing them is the least we can do to show our suppor and appreciation for the work they do. I am sure if you work you would want to get compensated for the time and effort spent.
I will leave the rooted now what questions to someone else or you can use the search function to search that exact title as there are many many many rooted now what threads.
Nothing is free....lol. Freedom from Verizon is enough for me though (except for that dang monthly bill!).
Go through the Stickies above and start exploring what you can do with the fascinate. You will find this is a great forum with lots of help, but don't ask "whats next" without reading all the work the devs have put into getting us where we are today. We all started where you are, believe me, so give yourself an afternoon, read, enjoy and then start flashing anything and everything!!!!!!

what does Froyo and superclean do?
Froyo is the OS 2.2 that Verizon hasn't come out with yet that is available not that you have rooted. Superclean is a ROM.
Again, I will ask that you read above. There are those that are much more knowledgable than I and have owrked very hard to put the info you are asking for in some great threads.....The "Stickies".

To make more clear what Superclean is, it is a ROM that basically gets rid of pretty much all the bloatware that Samsung/VZW puts on the phone (CityID, Skype, Need for Speed, ect.) and makes it looks more like the stock Android OS. Im my experience, makes the phone run slightly faster and improves battery life as well.

Now that's something I did not know! Wow, and I thought rooting was just to make the phone look "cooler" and run smoother...
