Rooted phone upgrade possible?

Hello
I was not sure if I should post this in phone section or software. Since it is a OS related question to upgrade to latest OS I figured this would be it.
First my phone info:
HTC myTouch 4G * has been rooted and currently is
Software
Kernel 2.6.32.21
Build
1.17.531.2
Software number
1.17.531

I would like to upgrade to latest OS without losing root. My notification keeps telling me there is an upgrade available however, it tries but fails upon the reboot.
Can I possibly upgrade this OS to latest without losing root? OR if not, can it be re-rooted without going back to OS level I am now?
I would appreciate a step by step if someone has this posted to follow. I searched the forum and could not locate this particular option

Yes, you can upgrade it easily. I did my MMX A110.

Thank you for the reply however, I have not been able to do this using the system update option and also concerned about rooting again after...

OTA updates do not work on a rooted phone. You either have to unroot or manually flash an update.
