Yes. To my knowledge the official OTA Gingerbread update that went out, then stopped, then went out, then stopped again has not been rooted.
The Gingerbread release "fixed" the exploit in Froyo that was used to gain root access.
So then the only way to root is to SBF a froyo build. Is that right?

The 2.2 RUU will not work if the phone has taken the GB OTA. The OTA will lock the bootloader from accepting an older RUU. Unfortunately there is no way to currently root an Incredible that has accepted the OTA.
If you accepted the OTA but you are S-OFF, you can flash clockwork on using the PB31IMG file in HBOOT, then Flash Super user and you will have root on your OTA Gingerbread. BUT, you have to be S-OFF to begin with. If your friend was not rooted previously then you are going to have to wait for Unrevoked or someone else to crack it.
I'll see ya's(near future) on the NOW ROOTED thread...![]()
Anyone have a guess as to when the nice folks of Unrevoked may get the Incredible w/ OTA Gingerbread update figured out?
If not anytime soon, will the directions at the link below work?
2.3.4 root,downgrade,and s-off - Android Forums
I plan on buying an used Incredible from someone on Craigslist, but he already got the OTA Gingerbread and has never rooted the phone (but he's selling the phone for pretty cheap). So does anyone have any suggestions on how to proceed?
Thanks!
That will work, but it's incredibly complicated and unnecessary. If you're comfortable running unrEVOked, all you need from that thread is the PB31IMG zip to go back to Froyo. Then unrEVOked will work.
Anybody try this yet?

Yea, me lol. I've had to do it before because I needed an insurance replacement. And I'm literally just about to do it again. I was rooted with CM 7.1 but my phone stopped charging so I had to return it to stock and take it in for a replacement. That zip flashes everything back to 100% stock Froyo, which is then rootable via unrEVOked
Thanks for the info! For some reason, I was under the impression that we couldn't downgrade to Froyo without having rooted the phone first. I'm not very good with phones/electronics, so I'm not sure how easy it will be to downgrade (is there any simple write-up?) even with your info, but it sounds like I should just get the phone first and figure it out later!
But is there any easier way than using the zip? Considering I'll be buying the phone used, I'm pretty sure there won't be anything I'll need to retain. I was hoping there would be an easy way to just reset everything to out of the box factory settings!
Thanks again!
iBow - Have you reverted to Froyo from OTA Stock S-ON Gingerbread?
I did not think the Stock/S-ON load would let you downgrade without rooting it first. Even with Stock and S-OFF my understanding was you needed to root first before flashing over the Stock recovery.
Just curious.
@Special-K and JkdJedi - It does look like the method outlined in that thread will work as they posted it.
So has anyone tried this with at Stock S-ON Dinc? Does it work?
I have the GB OTA and am completely unimpressed. I'd like to root but it's looking like a no-go.
