Im about to get the devour in a few days, and ive done a bit of searching here and on google, but i cant find anything about rooting the devour. Ive done winmo phones and blackberrys, but im not 100% sure what to look for either. if anyone has some info, it would be much appreciated. Also, i'll do some more searching later, but can android phones be tethered without rooting (hard wired or wi-fi)?

I don't think it's been rooted yet. It's too new. Every phone is a little different and rooting scripts that work for one don't always work on another. Be patient I am sure it will be figured out before long.

In a bit of good news, I was in the Verizon store on Friday asking about getting a case or other accessories for the phone and the manager was very excited I had the phone. He wouldn't tell me exactly when Verizon would be releasing it, but he said soon, that they were getting their inventory in and that they should have a shipment in of accessories for it this week.

I'm sure once this phone is actually released by Verizon and seriously marketed, people will begin figuring out how to root the phone and hack it. Hopefully soon!

unless they went and did something stupid like requiring signed binaries like they did on the milestone.

It is motorola, so you never know, but being motorola, it should support RSDlite to flash ROM images; that right that puts it a step ahead. I'd try it on my wife's, but I value my life, so until someone at least posts a ROM, it isn't going to happen from my end!

i dont know guys to be honest i dont think devs are going to root this phone. i could be wrong but i really can't see it happening. the devour is aimed at kids and is meant to compete with the sidekick. it's just not a phone to root really if you think about it

Just got this device on Friday (May 28th) found out how to bring up the recovery mode from here and with the Backflip getting 2.1 with the Motoblur UI it should be difficult to get it for the Devour. I know Motorola's official stance is that it's "under evaluation" but I don't see what the hold up would be since the Devour spec wise is a better device than the Backflip. Either way it shouldn't be hard to root it.

I found the source code for the Devour today so I don't know if that puts it closer or not since I have know idea on how to "cook" a rom lol Just thought I'd let everyone know my progress (yeah I know it wasn't much)

@rwilliams268 how did you enter recovery mode? I can't seem to get it to load. Holding down various button combos, with and without the usb debug mode enabled... I'm at a loss. I have rsdflash program 4.60 (just updated itself) can't seem to get the device to show up in the menu and without recovery mode? Even in usb debug mode I can't seem to get the device to JUST mount as a HD. seems to start every other moto BS thing too. Have you had any other luck?

ps. If I make legway I will post. Cheers!

I have found out how to force the update, though.
With the phone off, hold down the R and the spacebar, and turn it on. Hold them down until you get a warning-sign screen. Then you can press ZB for the text/menu:

Motorola/Android system recovery utility
E:Can't open /cache/recovery/command

F+H - reboot system now
Z+B - toggle log text display
Z+N - apply sdcard:update.zip
Z+M - wipe data/factory reset
That is what I found here. So now that we have access to the recovery mode and the source code what would be the next step? I was thinking of picking up that RSD Lite program and have noticed that the Milestone has digitally signed keys as does the Devour so there might be that problem to tackle but I did find some useful info here. Hope this helps us in our strive to root the Devour.

Ok with the Devour plugged in to the pc (Win 7 Ultimate 64-bit) and RSD Lite 4.6 running goto the Config tab in RSD and select DeviceId Options and make sure it's set for First-Come-First-Serve DerviceId Mode and then restart RSD. It will now show the Devour in the menu I know have the Device Properties such as MEID, Technology (CDMA or GSM), Software Version, Flex Version, Bootloader Version and DRM Version, but with no experience I don't know where to go from here. I also have MOTODEV Studio for Android installed along with the SDK's. So my question is where do I go from here???

I'm thinking you'd download a version of android 2.1 or 2.2 or 2.0 and try to use RSD to "flash" the regular firmware on the device... hopefully removing motoblur and simply installing (flashing) the regular android firmware. I think I will NOW try your method for recovery and have it plugged into the PC with RSD running and attempt somehow someway to flash this piece of ****. I'm sooooooooo sick of motoblur and that ERROR homescreen error BS force close crap. DONE! thanks for the help bro!

OR just have the update.zip file on the SDCARD... i'ma try that one now. I don't care if I brick it. **** it. i'm done with this stupid phone any how. thank god for best buys insurance prog. i'll just drop it in water if it bricks...

Just tried a "signed 2.2 froyo for the htc"... didn't work. "signature failed". when tried to install through the recovery mode. HOWEVER it did find the update.zip file i placed on the sdcard and opened it... just didn't like the signature. I'ma keep trying and I'll let you know what I find tonight or tomorrow. I'm currently downloading the froyo file from engadget that was posted today for the droid.

p.s. Does anyone know if you use the insurance program through best buy if they will either A- give you a different phone or B- they re-sell you a phone so you MIGHT be able to return it for another device. love my phone, HATE the software.

tried several times with different files downloaded and re-named update dot zip. I have no previous knowledge of the rooting process for android devices. PSP and iPhone seemed much easier to accomplish via simple software and simple recovery mode. I haven't gotten my RSD to even show the device. @rwilliams268 how exactly did you get the device to show. pluged in with or without recovery mode on already? etc? And does anyone here want to explain the signature process? some sort of device ID code that needs to be written into the boot image or recovery dealy bobber?

Still haven't gotten RSD to show device so haven't tried that way. Updating (flashing from recovery) through the phone hasn't worked either due to a "signature" problem.

MasterTurkey on the Devour make sure you have USB Debugging enabled and in RSD Lite under the Config menu goto DeviceId and make sure First-Come-First Served is checked then connect the Devour.

What version of RSD Lite are you running? I didn't see a first come first served under deviceID. I have automatic? I'm moving this weekend, but I'd like to take another crack at this over the weekend. Good luck. I'll check this every couple days to see if anyone else has made headway.

P.S. A rep from Best Buy told me that there MIGHT be wiggle room on their insurance plan for getting a different phone. After getting it rooted or NOT rooted, I would like the Droid. NO UI. f motoblur.

Any progress on rooting the Devour? I have no experience whatsoever with rooting but like everyone else...i'm sick of motoblur and it crashing all the time!

guys don't take this to heart or anything but your so far off. first of all you really expected a HTC update.zip to pass signature check on a Motorola device? playing with RSD Lite is just going to brick your phone beyond repair and verizon is going to tell you to kick rocks when you bring it back. you need a .sbf file for RSD Lite to work correctly. Really ideally what you would want is either a .sbf file with either a custom recovery or an unlocked boot loader.
