Hello all! I was just reading through the updated "rooting sprint galaxy s3" thread and everything look fine and dandy. Before i get started i just wanted to see if anyone has had trouble doing this via ubuntu? I havent downloaded the files needed yet so i dont know if there is a linux download or if i can just run everything through wine? If all else fails i have a windows 7 partition but would rather use linux. Any input would be great! Thanks in advance

If you connect the phone to your computer with a USB cable, is it visible within the emulator? If so, then ODIN will probably work that way.

It's easy to test. Install ODIN in the emulator, put your phone into download mode, and connect it via the USB cable. If you see a port listed in the com block in Odin, then you should be good to go. If ODIN doesn't see your phone, you'll need to boot into real Windows.

It should, wine isnt like running windows through virtual box, all it does is allow you to run windows programs while in linux so in theory it should work. I can import/export files from say photoshop running in wine to anything plugged in via usb. Im going to experiment with it tonight and i will report back.

well untill i can get the samsung drivers to install on ubuntu i cant continue with the root via linux. im switching over to my win 7 partition to gain root access

extracting .exe files on ubuntu can be a pain in the ***. it wouldnt run the install, just kept unpacking the file. im going to keep playing with it and see what i can do, i went ahead and completed the root on my windows partition with no problems except i missed the sweet spot while going into recovery mode, only a couple min set back but still a very very easy process.

Yep, one of the easiest phones to root I've come across. With a little bit of practice, you'll hit the boot-into-recovery every time. :)

The last phone i rooted was the palm pre and THAT was the easiest phone ive rooted. You punch in UP UP DOWN DOWN LEFT RIGHT LEFT RIGHT B A START(thought theat code was a very cool touch) in the search bar and that how you switch in to developer mode. And from there it as easy as adding a rom to the software on you pc ( cant remember the name) and then check the boxes of what ever you want to install to the phone. The thing that messed me up when booting to recovery was i kept jumping the gun, as soon as the phone vibrated i would let go instead of at the samsung logo lol.

well i was able to get the samsung drivers to install through wine, i just had uninstall and then install to the most current release. odin also opens through wine now but will not recognize that my phone is plugged in. as far ubuntu mounting the device, it shows that a samsung device is connected but only mounts as a music playing/ storage device. so this is the problem i need to overcome. im not sure if many people here use a linux distro as a primary OS like myself but im going to continue to work around this issue and maybe someone will find it use full,
