Rooting/HTC Sync Issues

So I was following this guide for rooting my EVO and got all the way to the part where I reboot, it checks the new PC36IMG.ZIP, and starts installing. I got a Fail-PU for the radio and then a Bootloader Fail-IC. Which means I basically can't get into anything other than the recovery screen. My phone is HBOOT 2.10.0001 and Radio 2.15.00.11.19. I just got the phone 30 days ago so I was running 2.2 with all the latest OTA updates.

I'm trying to follow the guide on the forum to get back to stock (or any ROM for that fact) but now I've run into the issue that HTC Sync will not install, no matter what version I download. I'm running Windows 7 x64 and I get a "The installation of HTC Driver Installer 3.0.0.005 appears to have failed..."

So first things first. How the heck do I get Sync installed on a Windows 7 x64 PC?

Second, how do I recover. I assumed that I could just download a good version of PC36IMG.zip and put it on my microsd card manually and then reboot and it would install correctly. If so, where can I get a good version of that *.zip file?

I've been all over this forum and can't seem to find what I'm looking for, so if someone could throw me a bone or point me to the correct thread, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Bish

On to your flashing issues. If you want to flash all the latest radios, I would suggest Calkulin's Combo radio flash. Here is a link to the XDA thread on it:

[ Radios ][ 12-17 ] All EVO Radio, WiMAX, PRI, NV & HBoot versions - xda-developers

One thing that I strongly recommend doing is downloading a MD5 Sum program so that you can verify that the ROMs and radio files that you are flashing downloaded correctly so you are less likely to have problems.

If you don't have a custom recovery loaded, I would suggest Amon_Ra 2.3 and that will allow you to flash and backup from the custom recovery.

So I am verifying the checksum of the original *.zip file (hboot_2.xx_soff-vs.zip), is that correct?

Well, if you can get into hboot, then you are probably fine there. I would verify the checksum of the radio update that you flashed and probably the ROM too.

I would say that if you want to get back to a Stock based ROM that you try Sprint Lovers.

That will basically run stock, but fully rooted so you can have the benenfits of rooting.

Thanks for the replies. I was able to follow the guide to get back to stock, so I'm up and running again at least. Will re-attack the rooting shortly.

Glad to hear you have your phone working again.

You might want to check out a few of the Rooting guides on the AC forums and over at XDA.

I sounds like my biggest issue is that I can't seem to download a decent file that passes the MD5 checksum. I'm downloaded 3 times now and haven't gotten a good file. Unless I"m doing that wrong as well.
