Rooting problem

Ok im sure this is a dumb question and an even easier answer, but i am new to the whole rooting scene. My command prompt isnt recognizing any of the commands i put in it or the ones that doroot.bat put in. Is there something i have to do to my command prompt to get it to recognize the adb commands?

1. Download z4root from [APP] z4root - xda-developers (Do NOT download from the Market)
2. Open z4root.
3. Choose temporary or permanent root.
4. Click "Root"
5. Enjoy.
