Hello,

I have a new droid x 2.2.1.

I like the phone very much but I don?t like the extraneous apps.
I use the task killer but it is like an infestation of bugs that keep coming back.
I just want that stuff gone.

I guess I?m looking for a reasonableness check here..
Would this be a reasonable?
Root
Backup
Remove junk apps
Then just leave it be till the next update, then restore for the update, then re-root and kill the junk again?

Thanks folks

First i would lose the task killer , there are many articles, and threads here explaining why you shouldnt bother with them and how the android OS works.

and yeah thats sounds resonable, but i would make sure you look at the forums and make sure what you are removing is safe and also i wouldnt delete anything just rename them from .apk to .bak this will make it easy for you to get back to normal and ready for the update

Use Titanium to freeze the apps you don't want. If you remove them entirely you run into other issues (like receiving OTA firmware updates). Or, as stated above, remove the .apk extension and rename it.

Also, instead of using a task killer (which constantly runs in the background, hogging memory), use AutoKiller. It uses presets to determine how much free memory you want, rather than constantly running to "kill" apps.

This is exactly what I was going to suggest. It's the easiest way to solve your problems and to restore those apps (just un-freeze them) for an OTA.

Thank you all,

I think I?m ready to push the button.. but I?m unclear about the ?after the root? backup.

So if I root with z4root.
Then use Titanium backup to backup all user apps + system data, then freeze the bloat ware.
Will unfreezing, un-rooting, and uninstalling z4root return me to a clean stock?

If after this, I go on to try other roms, don?t I need to make a system image backup and what utility is recommended?

Thanks folks.. this is my second post.. I?m saving the really goofy questions for number 3.

You won't need to remove z4root to return to stock, everything else is correct.

If after this, I go on to try other roms, don’t I need to make a system image backup and what utility is recommended?

Before you even think about dropping a custom rom onto the phone, learn how to make a nandroid backup and DO SO before any rom install just in case you don't like the rom. Another thing, if you have a good nandroid backup, you can reflash that when system updates happen, or stick with the rom 'till they figure out how to root the update. ;)

To make nandroid backups, get Droid X Bootstrapper, then read up in the rom/hacks section on how to use it and enjoy the world of custom roms. :)

Don't use any task killer. Don't use AutoKiller, either. They will only cause more problems.

Bloat Freezer in the market will freeze them for you for $1.50 instead of the $6 that Titanium Backup Premium charges. I just released it yesterday and it is getting tons of love from its users.

Already a fan of Titanium but does Bloat freezer only freeze apps or can it delete them too.

Only freeze at the moment since I originally wrote it since I deleted some apps and couldnt get any OTA updates. Might add options to delete in the future if some people would find it useful.

Tons of love? There are only two user comments... :D

Just busting your b*lls. ;)

I don?t understand this part.
To return to a clean stock, where there is no indication of having been rooted, would I not need to remove the z4root and possibly other files?

Also on the nandroid backup.. If I make the backup after rooting, then restore that backup, what is the result? Will it be a clean un-rooted stock system?

I just want to understand how to return it to a pristine clean stock in the event I need to take it in.

I?m a big guy and phones are fragile.. I?ve broken every phone I ever owned except for the ones I lost. I liked this one because its large and fits my hand. It has no protruding parts for me to snap off. But that?s a big glass panel on the front. I know that I?ll be taking it in for repair or replacement before its off contract. I don?t want to have some little sales guy leap up, point and yell ?ah ha! Rooter!!! no warranty for you pal.?
