Rooting/rom questions

So I did some digging but i haven't been able to find anything similar to what's happening with me...so hopefully this isn't a repost, or at least too much of one.

After rooting my Evo i'd been living with my sprint lovers rom and been pretty happy with it. Wireless tether, (gimped) hdmi, things were good.
However, the bug hit me.
First, with the hdmi. I saw i needed a kernel to get actual HD. I tried a few from kernel manager and, every time, i got stuck in a boot loop. So i decided i'd live without it (hard to do with an integral aspect of the phone).
But, soon, my gps started suffering. I don't use it a lot, but when i do use it, i really need it. So i did the gps fix and updated the radios and nothing really happened.
Around the same time my wireless tether decided to stop working. Or, rather, it would start "with errors."
Enough was enough. I tried EvoDeck (honestly i don't remember what it was called) but i wasn't too in love with it.
So i went to Vaelpak. My gps issue worked great. Hdmi, honestly, is still under the radar and just a hypothetical "fix" that i want to get into. But, still, wireless tether for root users AND the baked in wireless app don't work. On top of that, since i'm not on the final "stable" build of vaelpak, i'm getting a lot of random reboots and lock ups (at least i'm attributing it to the build).
So i'm now thinking of going to cyanogenmod so i can also integrate a wiimote with my hdmi. Those two features are just pluses, though, as the wireless tether is my primary concern.

So, really, my final questions are this.
1. I know it's all an opinion thing, but is cyanogenmod something i'm going to be comfortable staying with for a while?
2. Is flashing a new rom, clearing dalvik and cache and all that going to help with my radio(gps)/wireless tether issue?
3. (random) but disk images (i'm assuming from my nandroids and all that) are FILLING my sd card, can those be backed up elsewhere?

I used CM7 for a while. It's a solid ROM and does have a lot of mods/themes you can use to personalize your EVO. You can get a pretty good battery life from this ROM depending on the kernel you use.

2. Is flashing a new rom, clearing dalvik and cache and all that going to help with my radio(gps)/wireless tether issue?

From what I gathered (and someone correct me if I'm wrong) the radios will remain the same unless you flash another version. Some ROMs have cooked in GPS fixes so I would read the description for CM7 to see if it's in working order, same with the wireless tether app.

3. (random) but disk images (i'm assuming from my nandroids and all that) are FILLING my sd card, can those be backed up elsewhere?

What do you mean disc images?

You'll have better luck flashing the kernel manually. Lots of times apps like these cause bootloops. Just wipe Cache and Dalvik Cache.

I really enjoyed it from the beginning (Nightly 0), but now I'm on with Vaelek's AOSP. As for the built in wireless tether, I haven't had any issues with on Vael's AOSP. It takes a little time for it to connect. CM7 will be the same. Just a FYI.

Flashing a rom could help with gps. With CM7 my GPS greatly improved when I did the Fix. It can be found here. Remember when flashing a rom wipe data, cache & dalvik.

Disk images? The things you can move to your computer to help save space is your nandroid, pics, and movies. If your apps that has folders with info in them that you no longer use, then I would get rid of those. Whenever Google gets it Music out of beta you can use that for music, that is if you have any music on your card now.

Use amon RA. Manually flash things. Wipe everything except the SD card when you flash rom's, and only wipe dalvik and cache when flashing kernels.

When you flash cm7, make sure to also flash the g apps, or you'll have no market or Google apps.

To get HDMI working you'll have to flash a custom aosp kernel. I suggest toasts God mode kernel as it has the latest HDMI fixes.

There us built in wireless tethering in cm7 accessed via the wireless and networks menu in settings.
