Rooting- Searching for Straightforward Directions

So, I'm contemplating rooting my EVO 3D. I've been poking around the threads here, and while it seems like there's an amazing amount of help and information available, there's so much that it's kind of confusing and overwhelming. I know there are tons of similar threads, but it's hard to tell how up to date the info provided is.

I'm hoping someone can point me towards some easy to follow, straightforward directions for rooting, and maybe some info on what I can/should do after root. What I'm really aiming to do is get access to the hotspot function so I can use data on my new Xoom Wi-Fi. I have some interest in custom ROMs, though I honestly don't have any problems with the general appearance or function of my phone- just some performance tweeks (and the aforementioned data tethering) are about all I'd reall want.

I've got HBoot 1.5 and version 2.08.651.2 of the software.

Thanks in advance, Android Central Nation!

Re: Rooting- Straightforward Directions

im in your same boat and theres so much information that it is confusing and then you get the usualy internet attackers who yell at you "search function". I get it and have searched, but you get a 99 page thread with a lot of people have private conversations in that dont contribute much, or you get 99 results each thread having the word "root" in it at least 12 times....the point is....searching doesnt do much.

but from what i have gathered so far, since we are on version 1.5, we HAVE to use the HTC unlock method. i am trying to gather so more info because this method basically registers you in their database of unlocked phone users, which voids part or all of the warranty. how much of it is the million dollar question. no big deal except even though i have insurance, i dont want to go to sprint when something that is completely unrelated to me rooting the phone, breaks on it, and then they say sorry you have to pay 400 dollars for a new phone because yours is rooted. so i didnt really contribute much to this thread, but ya im in your boat. I want the mobile hotspot for my touchpad and im on version 1.5.

I am a newbie too, but may b just a step ahead, i rooted my phone using these pretty detail steps.

[GUIDE] HTC Unlock Hboot 1.50 + TWRP Recovery + Root + Flash Ur Ass Off! [9.11.11] - xda-developers

it was easier than I thought it would be.

I rooted but haven't installed any Kernals or ROMS, confused which one to go with. hope it helps. If it does dont forget to hit the thanks :)

will have to bookmark this, heh. I have been lax in looking for info because I'm holding out for CM7. On a sidenote... there are so many different roms and such.. holy crap, heh.

FYI...if you like the feel of stock with the bloatware taken away and runs much smoother/faster with great battery life check out CleanRom. You can download at Scott's ROMS - Home. Great rom!

I was previously on stock updated ROM and flashed CleanROM_2.7 yesterday. It is fantastic, especially if you like Sense but want to get rid of a lot of bloat. I did not have to install a new kernel but did go into recovery and did a data wipe/reset first. I used Titanium Backup to save apps and data, and of course did a nand backup.

fyi...version 2.7 has a custom kernal. if you are on hboot 1.5 then follow the guide on the link in the above posting. if you are on hboot 1.4 then just flash through recovery like normal. :)
