Hey guys so has anyone else noticed this? I saw it on a friend of mine's phone as well, but basically sometimes when I open an Application the phone will think it is in the horizontal rotation and open the app horizontally even tho I am and have been holding the phone vertically. Anyone see this? Is there a fix for it?

Thanks guys,

Matt

I have seen the same problem with an app opening in landscape when I'm holding the phone in its normal portrait position. I've run the G-sensor calibration several times with no effect on the issue.

I've noticed this with the Engadget app. It starts out in portrait but automatically goes to landscape when I open an article no matter how I hold the phone...

ahh this is really annoying and I'd hate to have to wait for another upgrade to remedy this issue...

I've noticed that sometimes there is a delay when going from landscape to portrait, but I haven't experience your issue...yet ;)

I get this almost every time I open the internet browser - I'm in portrait, it starts in landscape, after a brief delay it switches to portrait.

It not a deal killer but it does get annoying.

im having the same issue. most times is when im not holding it perfectly straight up. kinda annoying, it goes back in a second.

At the beginning I thought it was just remembering the state of the window of an app before you switch to another app and come back to the first app. But the behavior is not consistent at all. Like you said, not a deal breaker but definitely annoying.

Factory wipe and reinstall fixed this for me...
Are you using AppBrain to backup your apps, or you re-downloaded all your apps? Other question, the factory wipe doesn't mess up the activation right? I don't have to go to the Verizon store to reset anything, correct?

I used mybackup to backup my apps and settings to the sd card. Once I did the wipe I went to the market and re-downloaded mybackup and selected restore from the menu. I wiped by going to settings>SD & phone storage>factory data reset. after it's done, *228 option 1. No need to go to the store...

I bit the bullet and did a reset tonight. The orientation problem appears to be fixed but I also noticed some other changes that I believe were part of Froyo but didn't show up until after the reset. One of the most obvious was in the way that some shortcuts appeared. I fill one of the seven screens with shortcuts to entries on my people list rather than use the Favorites widget. I can fit 16 shortcuts on one screen and double up on call and text messages to one person. Before Froyo and the reset tonight each shotcut would have the persons name with Call or send message under the icons. This text would frequently get cut off. Now the icon has the person's name and a phone or message icon in the lower right corner and no text description underneath. It looks much cleaner. The internet bookmark shortcuts also look a bit cleaner and sharper. I have to play around with the phone tomorrow to see whether the reset implemented other Froyo enhancements that didn't take after the OTA update. I'm wondering if the OTA upgrade didn't fully complete on some DINCs and a reset finished the job.

Happens with mine also but never enough to where it's a problem. It's usually only a split second or something like that.

Ok. I gave a try to the mybackup app, but it messed up a lot of my settings, including the ringer tones (would vibrate for txt but it will not sound during normal sound profile). Even the Sound Manager app couldn't fix the issues. I ended up doing the full reset (reset + phone storage wipe). That seems to have fixed most of the rotation issues and the phone seems faster than with the original 2.2 update. My phone is 6 weeks old so I don't think the difference was due to "too much stuff stored in the phone", but rather than the OTA is not doing a full/clean install. Thanks for the suggestion anyways...phone is working a lot better now :D

One thing I noticed after doing the reset is that some times the app shortcuts/icons I add to the screen are not aligned to the grid (i.e., they are slightly higher or lower than the neighbor shortcuts). Once I delete the shortcut and add it again it appears aligned to grid. It is kinda annoying (it has happened with 3-4 icons already), but at least I have a solution

Spoke too soon. The rotation problem is still there although not as bad as it had been previously
