Rumor: Android 4.2 Features on Nexus

I'm talking about upgrading old phones without losing any data.

AFAIK the Theme Engine modifies no files on the /data partition.

But to existing devices, it's more than just "themes", right?

If that's the case, I think the development involved to upgrade (for example) a Galaxy S3 with TouchWiz based on Jelly Bean to this speculated "theme engine" would be quite extensive.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but do Jelly Bean and earlier builds of Android have any sort of "theme engine"?

It's weird. I kinda want Samsung, HTC, and Motorola to continue to do their own thing. If you don't like it, there's a Nexus waiting for you.

I doubt every phone in an OEM's lineup will be "Nexus certified." There will still be phones where they do their own thing.

Not from Google. HTC has a light theme system in their Sense UI.

The theme engine was developed by t mobile and essentially can be used on any device it is ported to.

Remember, most of those features are built into the system partition, or are apps. It's very easy to port stuff over, particularly for a Nexus.

It doesn't sound like they would have to use the customization center unless they wanted Nexus certification. But yes it seems like it would be a fair amount of work to change a device from an integrated UI to the customization center. On the other hand, if they already had a touchwiz UI built for the customization center for a seperate Nexus device, it might actually be easier to just apply this to the GS3 or whatever rather than rebuilding an integrated touchwiz from scratch from the latest Android version.

OK this makes a hell of a lot more sense to me than google putting out 5 new devices.

One OS to rule them all.

Now here is the sticking point, what about the carriers? We have seen what VZW did to the Gnex, what the heck do you think they are going to 4-5 of them a year?

"Reverting back to the stock UI"? I don't buy that one. There's more than just UI customizations.

That was my thought. I hate to be stubborn about it and say that these changes are all nice, but I just find it hard for HTC, Motorola, and especially Samsung to just easily allow their UI overlays to just go away.

I believe what the article is saying is if you have, for example, Android 4.1 with HTC's skin, and Google releases 4.2 before HTC can add Sense, you can "revert to stock" by upgrading to vanilla 4.2, and install Sense when HTC has it ready.

This already happened with a Samsung tablet. TouchWiz wasn't ready, so Samsung offered "stock" Android, with an optional TW download later.

Project Roadrunner seems interesting to me if it helps with battery life substantially. If it keeps phones juiced for 2 days that would be awesome!

What exactly is the streaming component? Does that mean they are working on a Netlfix/Hulu/Spotify competitor? A streaming service better fits the Google model than the direct sales they are currently doing with the Play movies/tv/music.

Hopefully they choose 1 chipset for the multiple Nexus devices, which should cut down on update time in theory.

1am, huh? Ugh, fun times indeed! Glad you got them though!

Your G-1 first look video today was great! I love that you can add Folders to the Home screen and put stuff in it like your games. Sweet!

Remember Google now has Fiber TV. So maybe they will bring in something for Android.

This whole idea sounds awesome to me as well. They really do need to think of a way to keep all the phones updated and not at the mercy of the carriers. I think its silly that people buy an Android phone and sign a contract and then never have an update to the software for the next two years because of the carriers.

Google has "one of the largest collections of smart people on the planet." i'm confident they'll figure it out.

"But wow, Jelly Bean: the greatest version of Android ever, cold-blooded Apple-killa. Thousands upon thousands of man-hours from one of the largest collections of smart people on the planet, explicitly devoted to winning over jerks like me." ? Sam Biddle ? Gizmodo.com

Do you think there will be a Nexus unveiling? Its neither Google/LG/Asus event. so hardly believe there will be a nexus unveiling.
maybe Andy will just hint about about next nexus device.

I don't think it will be an official announcement but we may get a look at the next version of android. Two years ago they showed off honeycomb on a Xoom even though they didn't give any details on the device
