I just rooted my htc hero a few days ago, and was wondering what I need to do to run apps off of an sd card. I have read it somewhere that it is possible, but have to idea where to start.

Thanks,

you need to partition the SD card. Doing so will make you lose all your info on it, so back it up to a computer first.

You should do a thorough search. Here is a starting point. It is for a minimal flash upgrade. It will place A2sd into your xbin directory. Once you create the partitions ( in recovery ) it will activate. Do a full backup with nandroid. Move it to a computer. Reformat then move your stuff from the computer to the fat32 partition. This link is for the stock rom.

READ AND GET MORE OPINIONS. THIS IS ONLY A STARTING POINT.

If you're gonna root your Hero might as well go all the way. Format your sdcard and search the Hero rom forum for Gumbo 1.5c.

Trust me. Start there and see just how fast these phones can be. Then when you get a hankering for 2.1 try one of the development roms.

What are the big benefits to doing this? Speed on the phone? Do the apps stay installed when switching ROMs?

gbhill,

What partition option I use to format my SD Card? I'm using the RA-heroc-v1.5.2 recovery img and the 3 partition options I see are:

- Partition SD
- Repair SD: ext
- SD: ext2 to ext3

I'm assuming its the first option, "Partition SD", but I wanted to run it by you before I wipe out my SD card. Thank you.

Partition SD

Choose zero (size) for swap
the ext partition is where your apps will go. I recommend 768 or 1024
the rest of the card will be partitioned as FAT and be accessible and a disk drive just like it is now.

Is there a partition limit for apps? I notice you recommended only 768 or 1024 for the size of the ext partition. I have an 8 gb SD card and I thought it would be logical to go bigger like 2-3 gb for the ext partition to install apps. However, I haven't done it before so I don't know if there is a size limit. Just curious.

No size limit.

I was basically suggesting a reasonable starting point lol. You can go as big as you like :)

Thanks for the quick reply. One last question and I will stop bothering you ;)

So how is the App2SD process now? Has it evolved where it's pretty much bug free and all Apps copied to the SD card run full proof? I'm gonna flash the DamageControl v1.0 rom and use App2SD on there. Not sure if I should just stay how I am and just install apps on my internal memory on my phone or should i switch to App2SD. Is it worth it? Are you using App2SD yourself and are you loving it? =)

Thanks gb!!! I've been trying to figure out how to format my SD card to run Apps2SD.
