Is there a way for me to upgrade to the 2.2 official without going back to 2.1? I am not rooted. Is there a reason to upgrade or to NOT upgrade?

If you're not rooting / theming / installing custom ROMs, as far as I know, there's no reason not to upgrade. But, yes, I do think you have to go back to the 2.1 to get to the OTA 2.2.
