Running out of storage?

I purchased the Shield 16gb tablet a few months ago. The first thing I did was pop new 64gb micro SD card in it so I could carry a decent amount of games with me. However, even though most of my content is stored on the SD card, my device is still reporting less and less storage. To date I have about 4gb free on the tablet. I had to delete the half life and portal games because they ate up the remaining space, even though I had them set to store on the SD.
Additional info: performed factory reset after OTA 2.0 update

Any idea why this is happening? Obb files? Anyway to fix this? Seems a waste to be able to have so much extra storage and still have the tablet cluttered with extra files. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The SD card is fine. From what I've read it seems that the system keeps some of the files on the native storage even when you assign an app/game to the SD card. The only way to remedy this seems to be rooting the device. I didn't really want to void the warranty, but I might have to risk it.

I've also seen this, but actually I assumed it was just a glitch in the way the system reports storage. In fact I feel like my Shield claims to be completely out of space (or even over!) in internal storage, but obviously that can't be.

Is it possible it's just an error in storage calculation or the way it's displayed?
