Running with the Galaxy Nexus and Headphones

Thought I'd start a thread specific to running with the Galaxy Nexus with headphones. I like running with my Galaxy Nexus because I can track my time and distance with the Cardio Trainer app. Using that plus streaming my music through Google Music is far better than just running with an Ipod, even though the GNEx is kind of a beast to have banging around in my pocket (I often just carry it in my hand and switch back and forth between left and right every few minutes).

I've been using the headphones that came with the GNEX 'cause my ipod headphones wore out and fell apart. But these headphones do not want to stay in my ear at all and don't seem to handle sweat very well.

I'm probably going to break down and buy these for running:

Amazon.com: Sennheiser PMX 680 Sports Earbud Headphones: Electronics

I hear a lot of complaining about lack of compatibility with the in-line volume adjuster on with a lot of phones, but can't find specific info on whether or not the Galaxy Nexus + Google Music is compatible with these controls. Anybody have first-hand experience here?

I've gone back and forth on whether or not to even bother with a pair of sport headphones with the volume control, but these Sennheiser PMX 680s seem to have the best reviews and recommendations. However, there are several cheaper options, including some other Sennheisers that seem basically the same just minus the in-line volume control (I'm talking about the PMX 80s and PMX 70s). Not sure what the difference between these are.

I'm also still in the market for a possible armband for the GNEX, but there are other threads on that topic that have gone nowhere. And I know there are a ton of headphone topics but this one is specific to running/exercising with the GNEX.

these are pricey buuuut, the bowers and wilkins c5's are great because they hook into your ear, or the monster isports are very good also. check them out

Amazon.com: Armband for Otterbox Droid X Defender Series Case by Tune Belt (Also fits Otterbox Defender Series cases for Droid Razr, HTC Thunderbolt, Samsung Galaxy Nexus and more): MP3 Players & Accessories
Fits with the Seidio Active case I have.

And I use these for headphones:
Sennheiser - Adidas EarFit Ear Bud Headphones - Adidas MX 680
They come with those funky fins that hold it in your ear just fine without having to jam into your ear canal. They also have the inline volume adjuster (no problems with it because it is mechanical, and actually works for other uses as a headphone extender if you need it) and a clip that you can attach anywhere along the cord.

I also run approximately 30 miles a week and made the switch to Bluetooth headphones. Now that I have gone wireless I don't think I could ever exercise again with wired headphones. My primary reason for trying Bluetooth was due to the location of the headphone jack on the GN. The location forces you to put the phone up-side-down into most armbands. My headphones are made by Motorola, but I don't recall the model.

As for armband, look for one that has Phillips Electronics branding on it at Walmart. The armband is more like a stretchy spandex pocket that fits over your bicep. The pocket stretches enough to fit the GN and a case. With the fabric stretched you can kind of see your phone screen, and the screen is touch responsive through the fabric.

I've bought two BT headphones for running and returned both: the Motorola 305 and Antic P311. Both had audio that dropped out during running frequently.

While the 305 sounded better, it sounded like a $15 30mm driver headphone.

The P311 simply sounded horrible.

I've resorted to simply wearing wired headphones again.

I just took a look at the phillips recommendation above and saw there is one which comes with music/mic control.

Does anybody know whether they work with the Gnex or not?

I really enjoy running with my Gnex but since 3 days the track control is broken. So I usually have my Gnex in the left hand and I have to switch the screen on to skip a track which is just slightly annoying. What bothers me most is that the ear buds just won't stay in my ear after like 2km when I start to sweat :(

BTW: Anybody using the endomondo sports tracker? You can find me under "Rene K." Would love to have some running buddies across the globe ;-)

I made the "Phillips" recommendation, but that was specifically for an armband sold at Walmart. I have no idea if the headphones are any good.

I've found that you can use just about any in-ear headphones you want. You just have to change out the silicone bud part for the squishy foam ones. They are kinda like ear plugs. You squish them, put them in you ear, and they expand to the size of your ear. They never fall out for me.

I use the LG tone bt headset . It's odd looking but they're just wired buds connected to a almost hoop type band you rest around your neck which houses the controls.

The best part is all day at work I wear it around my neck (it vibrates) and when I get a call, I reach in my collar, pop 1 bud in and press the button to answer. You don't have that annoying distracting bt sitting in your ear all day. And when your on your phone in public is just a normal looking earbud.

I would think though if you sweat a lot around your neck, this wouldn't work.

Where do you find these?

I hate wires hanging down when exercising. I have been extremely happy with the Motorola Rokr S9 HD Bluetooth headphones. They sound really good, fit snugly on the sides of your head, and are sweat proof. The snug fit keeps them from moving while exercising but I don't use them much for leisure listening because they get uncomfortable after 45 mins or so. The buttons are sealed and the mini USB charge port has a rubber flap to keep sweat out.

The armband I use is an Arkon brand. I think it was whatever size Amazon labeled as fitting the Gnex. It just fits perfectly without any case on the phone. It is nothing special but does the trick.
