Dunno why everybody is OK with the fact that actual S-OFF (sunshine team) is a paying thingy while all other HTC phones had free S-OFF??
Rumors are saying XDA is making money from it and forbid any dev to post a free version of S-OFF for M9.
Do you have any idea if any dev team outside xda is working in a free solution?

Re: S-OFF must be free!

Forgive my ignorance, but I've never used it. What are the advantages of S-OFF. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with rooting, but that's all I know.

Re: S-OFF must be free!

You gotta pay to play. These guys do a lot of work to figure out the exploits. I don't think that is too much to ask to completely free your phone. I spent more than that for a case/screen protector

Re: S-OFF must be free!

Well yes people are free to donate like for any other things at XDA like custom roms.
But oblige them to pay for an exploit, this is stealing people, imagine tomorrow if all custom roms are being paid!
And yes roms devs also spend hours of their lives to give us these things.
Btw sunshine team discovered the exploit even before the phone was released in some countries, meaning it was pretty easy this time.

S-OFF for me is the ability to update FW to the latest so I can use the latest custom roms, but for others it's used to de-brand a HTC phone like to not be limited by T-Mobile UIbut use international HTC pure rom

Re: S-OFF must be free!

Not sure why you think something that a Dev team came up with should be free. Don't want to pay, get to work and figure out your own exploit.
Sorry, not trying to be harsh, but people take their own time to do these things, if they want to charge for their work, they can. I don't see people freaking out BC a plumber charges for their services or a Xbox game developer charges for their game. All provide a service, all charge a fee. Don't want to pay for that game? Don't buy it.

I heart this comment!!! Hahahaa!!! Seriously, services require time AND money to supply. For Android enthusiasts who use S-OFF in order to attain the ability to flash firmware and perform RUU flashes, we NEED this. Payment is applied happily!!! For users like you making threads like this will only get you an internet bashing! #powertothedevs✊

From my fingers to you on the M8, M9 or the Chromebook! :D

Re: S-OFF must be free!

For one they need to purchase these devices in order to have the exploit for each device, For two, they hard brick some devices finding the exploit and need to replace it to keep working on it. And XDA is not making a dime off SunShine.. And i can tell you from being part of a team that develops roms even with the donations we get it works out to be only pennies we get vs. the hours put in on a rom and keeping up with the updates.

Re: S-OFF must be free!

I love how people fall into propaganda made by some devs.
Some people here talk like children who just discovered Android world and more specially HTC, just for info: S-OFF was always free on previous models of HTC, just some HTC Sensation had trouble getting S-OFF but ALL yes ALL HTC phones from the very 1st Android phone model they did got free S-OFF.
So why it was free for 6 years and now it's paid?
Again and again and again: you want to give donations because they did a hard work? be my guest!
I never said they don't have to get money from donations (if you can't read then you are too much in a blind hatred state), but it should be optional like every custom rom and kernel (and yes these require lot of work too)

Re: S-OFF must be free!

Because security gets better and better and ways to circumvent it become more and more difficult. Six years ago, getting s-off was a lot easier than with today's devices. Remember how the bad rap on Android back in them days was the lack of good security compared to the iPhone? I don't mind paying for s-off, although I do find $25 a bit steep. It should also be noted that many of the apps, games, and themes available in the Play Store started off as free on XDA. It is not uncommon for something to start of free and evolve into paid for.

No blind hate here. So you want the donation to be optional so you just don't pay? Sounds fair. That doesn't work in any other part of this world, you want a service, it costs money and you pay for it. Simple as that.

Let's just agree to disagree, we are obviously on 2 polar opposite sides of this argument and I don't feel like reading any more poorly written insults. Enjoy your M9 without S-off!

You perfectly talk about yourself here :)
You still want to bypass the fact that for years this service was free, you keep insulting anyone who don't agree with you and you don't even own an M9 from your Tapatalk signature

S off used to be free and now the developers charge $25. I'm not avoiding that. The developer can decide when they want to charge and how much they want to charge. They can do that because they are providing a service that you want, therefore the charge. They do not owe any M9 user anything.

And I do own a M9, thanks for telling me what phones I have. I just happen to be using my S6 today. Again, enjoy your s-on M9.

I would say its guys like you that want everything for free is why they charge for it now. If everyone had donated just a little bit to begin with it would still be free.

Re: S-OFF must be free!

Gimme gimme gimme! Maybe it would still be free of takers had actually done some giving. Gimme gimme gimme!

Re: S-OFF must be free!

I tried building my own ROM from CM. It's not as easy as it sounds. I almost shudder at the idea of trying to figure out how to hack a stock device. I think the developers have a right to ask for a payment.

As a side note, please keep responses civil.

I totally agree this thread should be deleted because some people are acting with rage and hatred, the other day there was this French article about how freedom of speech is destroyed by the guardians of the intellectual orthodoxy followers. The way people reacted to my OP with such hatred and insults is an absolute proof
