Hi all I've been having a problem with my s pen recently and can't get to the bottom of it, so I thought I'd post here to see what you think. First here's the issue there seems to be a 1/2 inch "band" across the middle of the screen (in landscape) that doesn't seem to register the s pen properly attached is an image of what is happening. As you can see if I draw vertically its fine but diagonally or try writing it goes wrong.

Here are some of my observations:
It seemed to start around the time the tablet was updated to 4.4.2
It only affects the S pen, using my finger is fine
It's the same in S note and papyrus so that should rule out an app issue
I've done a factory reset to see if that solves it but alas not

Any thoughts before I take it to my local Samsung repair centre as it still has about 6 months warranty left on it.

I believe I saw an S Pen calibration app in the play store the other day but can't remember the name. Maybe that will help... Do you have access to a different pen to try?

You should return to repair as it's still in Warranty. You will get the new LCD assembly: new touchscreen and new LCD. S-pen cable is from LCD ; LCD and touchscreen are glued together. They can only change the whole assembly of touchscreen and LCD.

This is a portion of the LCD that S pen not working, I don't bother to change the LCD because any attempt to separate the touchscreen from LCD might end up to damage both.

The S-Pen doesn't work on the touch screen, there's an extra "S-Pen" layer on Note devices that the pen interacts with. (The pen isn't just a thin plastic replacement for a finger, it's more of an RFID that talks to a "receiver" layer in the screen.) Evidently the update got corrupted. I hope you have the problem resolved now, but a reflash would probably have fixed it. (Which would have meant the same backing up and restoring that replacing the device would require.)

So I've spoken to my local Samsung repair centre and they would have to send it off as they can only fix phones in house :-/ they did seem to think that it sound like a software issue rather than hardware and gave me some of the suggestions I've already tried and suggested seeing if Kies had an update pending which could possibly fix it. Sadly Kies shows that I have the latest version. They have given me a number for Samsung Support in the UK so it looks like I'll have to give them a ring and possibly be with out my tablet for a couple of weeks :-(
