Starting a few weeks ago the volume of my phone especially on speaker is low.

I tried playing back a tone from an app on my phone and also on my old S8 and the S8 is about 15 dB louder.

On bluetooth headphones the volume is fine.

I checked all the equalization and volume limiting settings and I don't think they are limiting me.

Does anyone else have similar problems?

Is this software or hardware?

I tried safe mode. There it is harder to be quantitative because apps don't work but the volume seems about the same.

Go to Samsung members app at the bottom choose get help >on very top.page tap go to phone care and choose speakers to test Screenshot_20200924-135627_Samsung%20Members.jpegScreenshot_20200924-135600_Samsung%20Members.jpegScreenshot_20200924-135551_Samsung%20Members.jpeg

Ok, but speakerphone should still work normally in Safe Mode. So you're saying the problem persists in Safe Mode?

Yes. I notice that on my s20 when playing back music, listening to a call in speaker mode or testing the speaker in the Samsung Members app that sound only comes from the speaker at the top of the phone.

On my s8 sound will come from the speaker at the bottom edge of the phone and not from the top under these conditions.

Does sound ever come out of the bottom speaker? If not, I'd suspect either a faulty bottom speaker, or possibly some debris clogging the speaker grille.

In media my Note 20U plays from ear piece and bottom speakers, in call mode just ear piece.

I don't see anything clogging the bottom speaker.

I read somewhere that if you are on speakerphone and cover the proximity sensor then sound only comes out of the bottom speaker. I guess to protect your ears.

I tried this and when I am using speaker phone and cover the proximity sensor then the sound disappears. It seems therefore that my bottom speaker is not working.

Even in a call on speaker it just plays from the top speaker?
When you are on speaker mode it should come out from both. It should also come out of both playing music, videos or other sound related apps.

If you cover the proximity sensor then it would think its to your ear and sound will come only earpiece at top, both should play when on speaker phone , do you still have warranty or insurance?

Phone is less than 1 year old and I bought it through my service provider so I should have warranty. I also have insurance. The deductible is a few hundred $.

The phone is in a heavy duty case but I have dropped it a number of times.

Don't go through insurance , try warranty first

I poked toothbrush bristles into the bottom speaker opening and now it seems to be working.

I did not see any dirt in there so I am surprised.

Both speakers have similar volume output now and the one call i tried sounds much louder now.

We will see if it lasts, but thank you all for your help.

I'm glad to hear that
It totally slipped my mind to offer that suggestion, which I usually do :(
Your welcome!

Sound from the bottom speaker disappeared again. Booting to safe mode fixed it.

Then I tried connecting my Bluetooth headphones, listening to music rhythm disconnecting them and the bottom speaker had disappeared again.

Turning off Bluetooth did not help but rebooting fixed it.

I tried connecting, using, and disconnecting my headphones a few more times but the problem has not recurred.

This problem kept recurring for me so I have been living with it but a few days ago I received the update to Android 11 and i
The problem seems to have disaopeared.

I spoke too soon. This problem is still occurring.

I will try factory testing my phoneat some point.
