when i upgrade phones i try to have a clean start, no a 100% backup so i can download few apps, the one i really use and stuff like that, but others setting im ok to have it on back up, but because of the lack of storage now .. i want like decide or pick what and what not to bring from the old phone..

i have the s10 now, there is a way to check/un-ckeck/ select, what to have back up before is transfer to the new phone?

I also like the idea of starting fresh.....move the photos over and messages (don't know if messages are possible on Samsung's switch app). And that's it. My phone gets cluttered after a couple of years.

Yes, you can move messages using smart switch. It's fairly granular in allowing you to choose what you wish to move.

SMS backup and restore provides more granular options when moving messages.

@claykin: may i ask if one wants to move everything using Smart Switch from our S20 Ultra 512 to the new S21 Ultra 512, do you have an idea of how long it should take and whether there might be long halts of the progress bar?

one time, there appeared to be a hiccup and things just stopped for a long time, and whatever i did wasn't great because i found duplicates of my google contacts. i wonder if things halted for seemingly a long time during Smart Switch, what should we do?

thank you.

The transfer is much faster when using usb-c between the 2 devices.

I rarely use smart switch, but I have for other people. In general I find it can pause if you have several GB of messages. Otherwise, I don't recall it pausing.

In my case I commonly use SMS backup and restore to move my messages and call logs.

My personal opinion is to have as much as possible in the cloud so when you add your account to the s21, your data downloads from the cloud. This is best to avoid duplicates, etc...if you have this data in the cloud be sure to uncheck these items before starting the transfer.

The big disappointment when moving apps, is login credentials don't move so you're forced to login again to pretty much everything. So, I suggest using some sort of password manager.

Anyone have issues transferring over the Samsung Calendar last year? I did. Hoping I don't have the same issue this year.

Smart switch back up on the pc , allows you to restore by checking the categories like home screen layout, setting, message, call logs etc..

I forget, does Smart Switch also let you choose those options when you do a USB phone-to-phone restore?

I typically go thru old phone and remove any apps no longer needed/use while waiting for Fedex..haha, then just use Samsung Switch, cable to cable. I mean it really just copies settings, and messages, history, etc. Apps aren't copied just list you want. Those are then downloaded from store. Since all apps are downloaded and installed naturally I don't see the big deal.
