She is not only first of her class, she is first of her kind. She was the first ship to be able to simultaneously launch Marines in helicopters off her deck and Marines in landing craft out her stern. She could launch and land Harrier fighters to support those Marines.

Harriers are cool. I saw one fly at an air show. It has such a unique sound unlike any other aircraft.
