S3 Battery Problems

My S3 has never had a great battery, but in the last few days it has been terrible.

It went completely dead (rare for me) on friday night and since then a full charge is dropping about 10% every 30 mins with hardly any use whatsoever.

Anybody know what the problem might be?

Been thinking of buying a new battery but thought I would see if there is a fix first.

Any help appreciated.

I have tried disabling things, installed task killer (which helped a bit) but it is still really bad.

Would a factory reset make a difference? If so, what is the best way to back up apps, texts, etc??

Task killers will hurt more than do any good. Also wake locks are the likely culprit

People are quick to jump the gun blaming hardware or android.

Wakelocks are caused by apps keeping the phone from going into deep sleep properly causing massive drain even during idle times give me a few I'll give you an example

Also just realised, on battery info in settings, it says '22 hours 12 on battery'

I just took it off charge an hour ago which took it from 15% to 100%. (currently 48%)

Do we think the battery might be dying?

Look at the battery graph if the lines awake and screen on don't match almost perfectly some things running in the background. This is the most common and most missed cause of battery drain.

Your phone didn't register the phone as being charged to 100%. If it thought it hit 100% the graph would reset and only show discharge from 100%.

Yep you're right, awake is pretty much full and the screen on is just dots here and there.

The graph shows it going up and down rather than resetting. Shows like this for about the last four charges.

I posted this on the other thread as well, this is how you can find out what services you have running in the background, not just cached apps.

1. Long-press the home button and click on the pie chart icon.
2 Click the "RAM" tab and press "Clear memory".
3 Press the "back" capacitive button back to your homescreen again and long press the home button again.
4. Press the trash bin icon this time, then the back button and wait a few seconds. Now only your default processes should be running, as in the ones set to start-up when your phone boots up, and ones that are set to start back up when killed.
5. From your homescreen go into Settings > Applications manager > swipe left to "Running" and you will see a list of background services active. Have a look and see if you can see any that may be causing the battery drain, if not take screenshots of the list.
