S3 kind of lags...sometimes.

Hi!

So my wife and I both got S3's on Verizon. Love the phone. Sort of. I do have my gripes but most of them can be solved by a 3rd party app or just figuring out what I may be doing wrong, etc.

BUT...one thing that surprises me is the speed of this phone. It's nice and fast, yes, but one thing I've noticed is that when I hit the home screen button after using an app or two (even the basic messaging or email apps) it takes a moment to go back to the home screen and then when it does the apps sort of "populate" the screen over a second or so, each app quickly popping up individually along with widgets or whatever and then I have my home screen. YES, I disabled SVoice so the double tap delay is gone. But I'm surprised that there is this lag.

Now when I'm on my home screens, they are all really fast and things open right away and SOMETIMES when I open an app and then come back to the home screen soon after the home screen and all the apps on it instantly pop back up AS ONE. But most of the time I'm involved in something else for a bit and hit the home screen button, it takes a second or two for the home screen apps to "fill out" the screen. Granted, its not "too long" only an extra second or so, but still shouldn't this phone not have to seemingly wait to "LOAD UP" the home screens? I had an HTC Thunderbolt before this and I don't remember this noticeable lag. Is this touchwiz? Is this my phone?

If you think redrawing of the home screens are bad on this phone you should check out the galaxy nexus or the HTC one series where it redraws constantly due to low ram. What I have noticed is that certain widgets do slow the phone down a little like the play store widget.

I forgot to mention that this problem could be isolated to ICS phones since it seems to happen on phones with ICS.

the only lag i have noticed is when first launching the music player . other than that this has been the best android phone i have used so far .

No redraw lag here, running GO Launcher. But I don't fill the homescreens with widgets.

Try a different launcher. I run Nova and never noticed that and I'm pretty sensitive to that sort of thing.

Yeah that happens to me too. Especially noticeable in the big default clock widget. I've also noticed lag when switching to homescreens with big widgets like the gmail widget. The lag went away When I removed the widget though.

I'm using Nova Launcher and notice no lag at all. I don't recall noticing any lag prior to using Nova either. That said, it could possibly make a difference what apps and widgets you are using. If one widget is slow to update I would think it could slow the whole process down.

I'm not sure what your source is on the gnex but mine works great. Transitions are always smooth unless I quit out of a app that's say streaming or something you see a slight bump.

The only time I see lag is when it is power saving mode.

The home button also activates S Voice with a double tap. So it lags because it is waiting to see if you are going to push it twice. Open up S Voice and go into the settings of the app and uncheck the box that says "Launch S Voice" this will quicken the home button up and get rid of the redraws.

He said he disabled S voice.

Change your launcher & some you can try to lock into memory (reduce redraws). Also go into phone settings/dev options & change the animations to .5 or off, will give you a simulated speed up.

turn off power save function too. That could cause a lot of lag.

THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP!

I'll try some of these things. I currently only have 3 widgets running on 2 different screens. The clock widget. The Business Calendar Free widget, and the Triplog widget. I used the first two on my Thunderbolt and never had this issue. I'll remove them all and see if that helps. And if it does, I'll replace them one by one and see what happens. This happens intermittently no matter what my battery level is so I don't think its power save mode related.

Again, it doesn't happen all the time, but its pretty often and its just a one or two second delay while the apps "populate the screen"...granted, it goes quickly, but still I'm surprised. Also, once I'm on the screens everything is fast and smooth going between screens, etc.

I'll try a different launcher and maybe the above dev settings adjustment if the widgets turn out not to be the cause. Just strange...

Removed widgets. Turned off power save. Disabled S Voice. Turned off transitions/animations in Developer Settings.

Still have the issue.

It's almost like the icons flicker on. They briefly "pop up into place" after I've been away from the home screens for a bit. Again, once the screens are up and running, everything is super fast and smooth. This happens when I'm coming back to the home screens after either having the phone asleep for a bit or after doing something like sending/receiving several texts or emails or or some running some app for a while.

Is this an ICS issue? Touchwiz issue? My phone only issue? (btw, I have the 32gb version)

I know people said try another launcher which I will if I have to but I'm shocked that this happens on this phone and not on my previous phone (Thunderbolt) whose specs were much less.

Very frustrating.

Most of the time it isnt the hardware with Android..its usually always a software issue. Coming from a Thunderbolt you were dealing with Sense, so now your dealing with Touchwiz..which may or may not be contributing to what your seeing.

Looks like it was a Touchwiz issue. I tried removing all widgets, turning off SVoice and Power saver and animations/transitions and even removed my SD card...but I still got the brief flicker of my desktop apps when I came back to the main screens after texting or running another app for a while.

BUT... switching to Nova Launcher seems to have solved everything! Woohoo! At least so far. I like it too. I'm just surprised Touchwiz was having issues...at least on my phone.

I noticed this slight occasional lag too and was surprised. Coming from an iphone i expected the s3 and software loaded on it to be slicker and faster at loading basic things like contacts and messages etc

I did the following which solved the problem for me:

1) turned off power saving
2) killed any apps running in background i wasnt using
3) disabled s voice
4) lowered animation to 0.5 in developer tools

Worth posting incase people dont want to download a 3rd party app to solve the problem. Worked for me and ive tested it from standby on several occasions.

With contact lists its worth mentioning if you are synching with google or another account like that it will slow down the loading of the contacts if you have lots of email addresses and numbers in your google contacts.

Like the phone a lot but the software isn't quite polished yet like say iOS.

Would be great if you could default the call log list to only show calls and not text messages. You shouldn't have to download third party apps to solve simple things like that

Great forum by the way

Cheers

S14Tat:
I have the exact same problem with my GS3, and have Verizon as well. I also did what everyone told me about turning off the SVoice. I also turned off the power saving options. I still have the same issue though: lagging when I hit the home button. Someone please tell me how to fix this problem? Also I was wondering if anyone knows weather having multiple widgets on one page will cause additional lagging?
