S4 root issue--wont recognize root anymore?

Hi guys, I am pretty familiar with rooting, flashing ROMs etc but I've run into a small issue: when I flashed a recent ROM called SlimKat I noticed my phone won't recognize root apps. For example, when I downloaded battery calibration it says my device must be rooted before I can use it. I tried to download superuser it says I need to update my binary. Is there an easy fix for this or would I be better off flashing a different ROM? If I have to flash a different ROM it isn't a huge deal. Just wondering why my stuff isn't up to date. Thanks for the help.
