I had the same problem as Atri Basu above, and flushing the earpiece with compressed air fixed the problem. With Settings set to turn off screen during calls, I made a call, the screen turned off, I held out the phone away from me, and the screen turned on again. Proximity sensor is working. Thanks for this!

thanks to EEGRAH:
I had same issue, screen turns off when holding to my ear, and that's what I want it to do, I also want it to switch back on, as it's designed to do. But it wasn't coming back on.
As suggested, blowing into the ear peace hard for a few seconds fixed the problem which was most likely dust obscuring the proximity sensor. Now it works fine, thanks for posting that suggestion.

Thanks guys this is an excellent tip that I will remember if I ever have any issues with mine.

My problem is similar. The proximity sensor is on. It doesnt happen when I am making calls. It only happens when I receive calls. The second I answer the call, the entire screen goes black and home button and power buttons dont do anything. I have no way of ending the call or even have access to my phone unless the caller ends the call.

Thank you, EEGRAH! Dude, you totally rock. Compressed air fixed the problem. Went to Verizon store and asked for solution. Was told I would have to either reset, or replace the phone. You just saved me a ton of hassle and headache.

Bought my S4 on eBay. It has been updated to 4.3. Same issue with the screen not coming back on when I pull phone away from ear. Settings are correct to make it happen as expected.

Tried blowing in earpiece. Used compressed air. Even disassembled and blew out all components. No luck. Phone still goes black immediately after making connection and will only turn screen back on after pressing home button.

Would appreciate finding a solution besides blowing in its ear. Thanks.

For me the same. I have updated to version 4.3 and de screen goes black when puttung to my ear. After removing it from my ear the screen will not come back to life. I tried to clean the speaker with compressed air, and even with alcohol and compressed air. No results. When i do the test sensor test: The proximity stays on value 1. The ADC when my hand before the sensor is 255 and after i removed my hand the ADC is 46.

Does anyone has an other idea about fixing this problem?! For now i have you check out the box of going black during a call...

thanks!

Mine does that too sometimes. It seems like a software bug. I just hit the home or power button to bring it back on if I need it.

A factory reset after each OTA update is a good idea, too.

All: I was experiencing the exact same problem you have been describing. I used a can of compressed air (the kind available for cleaning keyboards and such) on the ear speaker and that resolved the problem. The screen on my phone comes back on consistently when I pull it away from my face while on a call (and the screen only turns off when I put it up against my face). This, of course, is when I have the "Turn off screen during calls/Turn on proximity sensor during calls" feature enabled.

I have the flip cover, when I open the cover during a call, the screen is off and sometimes pressing power or the home button doesn't work.

I checked all the settings in different modes and nothing works...

I had the same problem and I figured it out. When I make a call, the screen goes black as it should. The problem was that when the call ended and I took the phone away from my face, the screen never came back on so I could end the call. My solution was to remove my case. Once I did that it worked. It appears my case was somehow getting in the way of my proximity sensor. Hope this helps.

Blew compressed air into the earpiece and Boom! Best fix ever. Now if all that crap from early in the thread could be removed it would be the best thread ever. Really happy to have the proximity sensor back to working. Thank you!
