Originally purchased the phone through AT&T, and recently switched to Straight Talk.
I keep receiving messages to update the phone through AT&T. Is it safe to proceed, or I will have to worry about apn settings and restrictions?

Since it's an AT&T phone it should be fine. The apn setting just may get reset and you'll have to reset the straight talk one.
