After the lollipop update with Verizon, Google Chrome is killing my battery. Is my only option a factory data reset?

Anyone know of a good backup/restore option?

Try a cache clear first, if you've already tried that then maybe uninstall then reinstall Chrome. Save the factory data reset as a last resort and use samsung kies on your PC to make backups before you FDR :)

Ugh, it's back. I did a cache partition wipe and everything and Chrome started running hot again.

Yeah did that twice. Uninstalled the update I mean. Can't uninstall the whole program without rooting, right? Guess this means FDR...

You're correct :(
on the bright side after all the setting things back up the way you like them, it seems that an FDR solves most Verizon issues with lollipop....

ARGH! I did an FDR and let it restore the apps and Chrome is doing it again!
Did I need to not reinstall all the apps and do them one by one?
At this point, do I need to do another FDR, or can I uninstall all of the apps individually? It took a LOT of time to set things back the way I like them, especially with AutomateIt.

That's how I'd do it, install each app one by one.
I believe you can run your phone in safe mode to narrow down what the culprit is but it sounds like chrome is your problem. maybe another app is interfering with chrome.

Edit. when you factory data reset don't install any apps do them one by one slowly and maybe you'll find one that is interfering with chrome and causing the battery drain.

what non factory apps are you installing?

I should add you probably don't have to do another factory reset just uninstall all the extra apps you installed and do a cache clear just to clear things out. then install one app and if it doesn't start acting up with chrome after awhile, install another one and keep going that way until you find something that might be interfering

I was running a ton of apps, but now I've uninstalled just about all of them and order seems to be restored. I'll install what I need one at a time and keep an eye on it. Will post my findings.

Good deal :)
I figured it had to be an app or many apps not playing well with lollipop.
Keep fighting the good fight & do let me know ;)

I've done 2 FDR's and several cache clears. Nothing helps.

Battery dies in about 8hrs. It used to last a day and a half.

This is really pissing me off.

Before Lollipop, the screen was my biggest battery drain, now it's Android OS and Android System. This is making me want to try an iphone.

someone mentioned that during the initial Verizon update for lollipop it asked users to remove your memory card to avoid problem maybe give that a try. I can't confirm this as I'm with Sprint
if you factory reset while having your memory card unmounted and removed maybe things will clear up I cannot be dead sure on this and I haven't heard a lot about it but it seems having the memory card in the phone while you accepting the update caused problems. Just an idea. I do know that a lot of apps do not play well with lollipop what I mean by this is after you factory reset and set your phone up and then download all the apps you had before maybe one of them is not interacting well.

I thought I had it licked, but alas... Things were working as expected until yesterday. Chrome isn't quite as bad, but is still high. The Android OS and Android System are really killing mine. I REALLY don't want to do another FDR, but if it comes to it.

Brief rant: My GS3 worked perfectly until the update around March 2013, when it became buggered and laggy. My GS5 worked perfectly until Lollipop. WHY CAN'T SAMSUNG FIGURE OUT THE UPDATES BEFORE RELEASING THEM?!?!?!?! I don't have some unique combination of special apps that cause it to be unpredictable. I understand that open source is not without its inherent drawbacks, but COME ON!!

Sorry to hear you are having problems but can I just correct on who is responsible for your firmware release as it is NOT Samsung but your own carrier who has screwed you over. See #1.6 of 40 Galaxy S5 models - Dummies Guide Samsung had issued over 100 Lollipop firmwares worldwide without hardly a murmur until Verizon released their own, god awful, version of Lollipop + modifications + heavy duty bloatware that required a unique 2 stage update to get it all on to your phone.Verizon firmware is a hybrid carrier released version of Lollipop which bears about as much similarity to Samsung's release as a camel does to a horse. In short, Verizon have shoved the rough end off a pineapple where the sun doesn't shine, to its customers.

I agree 100% with ironass. Please don't put the blame on Samsung for the issues with Lollipop. I am running 5.0 (NOT 5.01 or anything higher) on my GS5 here in Canada and I have ZERO issues with mine. Every thread I've read, every complaint I've seen, all come from Verizon customers. They (and AT&T, and Rogers, and Bell, and....) take what Samsung provides, adds their own bloatware and apps and then pushes it out. Many times those apps and system updates for their networks break other things and it takes them a lot longer to figure out what they did (if they admit it).

Install Avast battery saver first. It's better than other apps because it does tell you what APP is draining battery.

If indeed Chrome, which prob is, my solution was hibernating Chrome with Greenify.

I am rooted with Greenify donation package and Xposed framework installed, allowing Greenify's experimental feature to hibernate system apps (Chrome) to be enabled.
