S6 brightness issue, factory reset still having issues

My s6 (not the edge) is having a weird brightness issue where the screen dims in dark lighting and brightens in direct bright light (the sun right to the sensor or a flashlight). I have auto brightness off and have reluctantly factory reset my phone to no avail. It's a shame because when I do put it in direct sunlight for a second you can see how great the display looks on full brightness :(
My phone is not rooted and has the latest system updates installed. I have tried googling the issue and have only found the issue in the S6 Edge and reportedly a system update fix was released for it.
Thanks for any help

That's what it's suppose to do....... Even with auto off/on that last "super bright" setting will only come on with extreme bright light shining on it.

I'm sorry but if it was a "problem" with the S6 Edge that was /fixed/ I don't think that's correct. Why would it still have an auto feature if it's "always auto"? That doesn't make sense

I think you are talking about Adaptive Display. Go into SETTINGS-DISPLAY-SCREEN MODE and change it to BASIC. Leave the auto brightness off, and see if that does it for you. If you google lollipop and auto brightness, you will likely see others complaining about similar, assuming I am understanding you correctly. Essentially, there are two settings that work in conjunction to set the brightness to appropriate levels. If you are looking for total control, you need to turn them both off.
