Hello Everyone!

I came across a 'problem' of charging my phone (s8+) using a portable charger. When I used the portable charger, on the phone notification bar it said that it would take up to 4-6 hours to fully charge the phone.

It usually take about an hour to fully charge the phone from using the wall charger.

Any idea why is this happening?

Thanks!

Sam.

Portable charger -
- Capacity of 50000mAh
- Two pots, Out 1A and Out 2.1A

Sounds like the portable charger isn't "Fast Charging". Like Bonus_Point my S8 charges much slower when attached to anything except the charger that was supplied with the phone, which includes a portable battery pack or on a wireless charger.

BTW, "portable charger" normally refers to the one you plug into the wall, the other one, the one you're having problems with slow charging, is a powerbank. (Why? Because Motorola named those devices portable chargers back in the days when 2 way radios were charged in a big "drop the radio into the slot" chargers that charged 8, 12 or more at one time, and the one you could take with you and plug into the wall was a "portable" charger" Everyone in the industry has stuck with that ever since.)

I've gotten different charging times depending on the CABLE. try switching out the cable for the one that came with the phone.

I would guess that for some reason, the phone is not detecting your portable battery pack as a dedicated charging device. The usb standard limits the current draw from a device to 500mA, unless it detects that the device it's plugged into is designed solely for charging. The simplest way this is done is by shorting the data pins. There does appear to be a way to signal using the data pins as well from what I read years ago. Fast charging has likely added more signaling protocols as has usb-c but I haven't confirmed it by reading over the standards. It's likely something is wrong with your charger, or it wasn't designed properly. I've seen this with some cheaper 12v chargers.

The charger (or power bank/pack) should say Fast Charging or Quick charging. See attached pictures for example (one is a Samsung fast charging adapter, the other is a Kmashi quick charging battery pack). Also, make sure your phone is set to fast charging in the Settings.

Quick charge, or QC is a specific standard by Qualcomm and employs a variable voltage regulator to increase power to the device.

Fast Charge "should" be used for those devices that support the increased amperage of the USB port to 1 or 2 amps (usb 2.0 still only had a required power output of .5ma). It wasnt standardized anywhere but since increasing the amps supplied by a power brick does not harm anything it became an accepted way of decreasing charge times without the need for a monitored standerd. Either a device could fast charge or it could normal charge based on the brick and chord. Also the lack of a fast charge standard could also attribute why there is no accepted qualification for chords that can support high amps. The closes thing we have is a cables guage rating, something I only know monoprice.com gives out.
