I have absolutely no reason to upgrade to a S10 when this phone works perfectly and fulfills my needs. I'm happy

I don't mean to thread-jack, but on point to your post -- minus the latest feature, bell, whistle, etc. -- is there anything that the 9 and 10 do that you just can't do with the 8? I am about to jump ship and move over to Samsung (from BlackBerry Android), and I am probably going to have to get an 8 -- simply for the ability to use a PKB -- and I was a bit concerned.

Is this device going to be obsolete anytime soon? Someone buying one today won't have problems getting updates, support, etc.? Thanks in advance.

You're 100% right. There's technically nothing you can't do on the S8 that can be done on the 9 or 10. Sure, there's the multiple cameras, reverse wireless charging, etc., but you have to ask yourself if any of those things are deal breakers. The S8 still takes amazing photos, is speedy, and has that amazing Samsung display. That's why I'm keeping mine for another year.

That being said, if updates are a concern (and if that's how you define the longevity of a phone), then the end is definitely near for the S8. Although Samsung hasn't said anything, Android 9.0 will likely be the last major update the S8 gets (just based on historical experience, as the upgrade to 9.0 will be the phone's second major update I believe).

You'll just have to weigh the pros and cons, but from a capability perspective, I definitely don't think that the S8 lacks anything. It's still an amazing phone, and will end up being the phone I've held on to the longest (by a wide margin).

Thanks for the reply and info. So what's the downside to the updates scenario? Should updates be a concern? I am technologically handicapped, LOL, so I have no idea how important updates actually are. I know when I was with BlackBerry (BB OS, before Android), updates to the OS came very, very slow (thanks to VZW), and when they did come -- I was unhappy with a lot of the changes that came along as a result of the update.

So, if there are no more updates...what happens then? Thanks.

Might already be obsolete as it has yet to receive an update to android 9.0.

Sprint started rolling out Pie to the S8/S8+. Not sure about the other carriers.

THe S8/S8+ was a fantastic phone for me but I went to the V40 due to having band 71. I work on the 2nd floor of my job and there are no windows and the signal is weak (Wifi is weak as well). I get much better reception.

Something I did early on was to disable all OS updates on my S8. It still runs the original OS (Android 7, I think) which was near-flawless "out of the box".

The thing has been a joy to own because every day it just works, like it did yesterday and like it will tomorrow. It's still speedy and the battery life is perfectly good. I can't see any reason to replace it with anything else.
