S9 AC Adapter not capable of fast wireless charge?

This is an interesting development, and one I have verified myself. Apparently the fast charger that comes with the S9 & S9+ may not support 3rd party fast wireless chargers.

Upon trying to figure out why my Seneo Fast Wireless charger would only work at normal speeds, I sent an inquiry to the manufacturer. They told me Samsung changed something with the bundled chargers in the S9/S9+ that doesn't allow these charging pads to work in Fast mode. They informed me this was only true with the S9/S9+ and older Samsung fast chargers would work. I was skeptical to say the least, but gave them the benefit of the doubt.

Sure enough, using an AC adapter from a Galaxy S7 did enable fast wireless charging with my S9. Same cable and same outlet were used. Only when I used the S7 adapter did the fast wireless charge option also appear under Settings - Device Management - Battery - Advanced Settings

Will be interesting to know if this is true for other 3rd-party fast wireless chargers as well.

It is capable... as long as the wireless stand supports their standard. The block works perfectly well with Samsung's own cradle (older ones, too). It may not be compatible with all chargers, which is different than 'not supporting' fast wireless charging. :)

Hence the question mark... Good to know it's just 3rd party fast wireless charging pads that may be affected..

(I actually meant to put 3rd party in the topic)

What they're really saying is that they don't want to make a separate pad for the S7 charger and the S9 charger (or design one that will work with both). A lot of these companies (Seneo seems to be one - look at their web page) just buy unhoused devices (like a Qi charger for Qualcom 3) and put it into a housing. They don't want to hire product developers to actually develop a product that will work in a way that's not on the "use it this way" sheet they get with it. That's how they can sell theirs for less than Samsung sells theirs.

Fair enough. It just surprised me that there may have been something that changed with the new AC Adapter. It's a good thing for people to know though if they run into this

Now that I'm getting fast charge, I like this stand! (mine is similar except has a blue/green LED strip on the front).

Glad to know this thread helped someone who had a similar issue.

I haven't found a really good source, but I've seen it in a few places before. But it sounds like Samsung's adaptive fast charge is not the same as Qualcomm's quick charge. With the first Samsung wireless fast charger I got, I tried plugging it into an Aukey QC 3.0 charger as I use 6-port chargers in two places in my house to declutter. It wouldn't fast charge. If it is indeed different, it could be that Samsung's charger isn't compatible with a QC input.

It's not. Which is why they didn't support Qualcomm's latest two, because they came up with their own and avoid paying royalties. The phones (and at least up until recently, it seems, the chargers) are still compatible with QC 2.

OK, Had to try it so I brought a bunch of adapters from home: Note 5 (plus adapter), S7, Note 7, S8, Note 8, and S9...even Tab S3 and Tab Pro S (Windows). Seneo Fast Wireless Stand (Black), and yes, the S9 adapter will not fast-charge while everything else will.

Weird thing is the Note 8 and S9 adapters have the exact same part number and power input/output rating. If they changed something, it shouldn't have the same PN. Good one Sammy.

It's entirely possible that you may have had a bad one. One of the adapters that came with one of my wireless fast chargers didn't work out of the box. But works fine when I plug my phone into it. Perhaps the wireless fast charger had a different handshake with the adapter and had an issue on that particular unit. I just sealed it with the charger that came with my phone and everything was fine.

Yeah, the adapter works fine with the phone (which supports Samsung's own FC protocol, obviously), but the wireless stand (which only supports QC) doesn't. It works with older adapters, and since at least one of them shares the same PN with the S9's adapter, I thought it was really weird.

You said your phone adapter worked with the wireless charger... is that an S9 adapter? Or an older/different model?

It was from my S8 or S7. Can't remember which.

Yeah, those still work. I guess the adapter still supported QC (because I've used those in non-Samsung devices and they do Fast-Charge when wired). I suppose Samsung decided to remove QC support from the adapter in the S9 line and stick to their FC standard.

I'm not sure Samsung ever put the QC specs on any of the chargers. In which case, they would have no obligation to include it in all their chargers. It really just needs to work with their phones. And they may not have had a specific cut off point in production if they changed something.

Frankly, the only thing I use the Samsung adapters with is my wireless fast chargers. I use power strips that have USB ports and multi-USB (6+) adapters for everything else. Even at work as I always seem to have multiple USB powered devices that need charging. I even have a 6-port charger I take with me when I travel.

Wait, is fast charge with wireless chargers the same as Qualcomm Quick Charge?

(possibly a ridiculous question, but now I'm confused since it's apparently QC2.0 chargers that work properly with wireless fast chargers.

The most widely used WIRED standard, yes, it's Qualcomm's. Since for Wireless Fast Charging you need a certain Voltage/Current supplied from the charger, the manufacturer has to adhere to one of these. But the wireless part is Qi, which is a bit more open (although manufacturers can still build up on it and add things of their own to charge even faster, like Samsung did for the S9 if you use their pad).

This explains a bit better (although it's not a super simple read)

I'm having an issue with my S8
I have no issue with wireless fast charging but I can't get it to Fast charge when plugged in to the fast charger the phone came with. I also purchased another one made by Samsung but it will not work plugged in either.

It starts to Fast charge then after a couple seconds it goes back to "Cable Charging" or worse yet "slow charging.
