Started yesterday when got home. My wife has the "identical" phone and hers no problem?
I've tried all the turn off wifi, "forget" wifi and re-boot on the phone, still not working. software is also up to date.
very frustrating, could sure use some help. Thanks!

That's called a limited connection. and internet connections are almost impossible to troubleshoot remotely. See Troubleshooting Wi-Fi Connection Problems, but forget about resetting or restarting (or rebooting) the router except as a last resort - it's evidently working for your wife's phone, so it's working.

But if you don't know anyone nearby with internet experience (from a technical viewpoint), it's going to be difficult, unless, in checking things at that link, you find something not as it should be. Then post again and maybe one of us can figure it out.

Start by rebooting the modem and the router.

Resetting the network preferences. General management > Reset.

Clear cache partition.

Carrier
OS build and security update level
Identical phones but identical software?
Anything you installed.

Last, factory reset. I'd hold off on restoring.

Gayle, the modem and router are evidently connecting to the internet - his wife's phone gets full internet connection - so the probnlem isn't there.

Thank you thank you for your replies. I did try re-setting the router, and that worked! Logically that makes no sense to me b/c my wife's phone was still properly connecting - + my laptop had no problems where I posted this!!? I incorrectly assumed it was "my" phone. Also just found out from one of the kiddoes that they've found the wifi to be "glitching" the last few weeks when playing games online. Hhmmph! that information would have been helpful.
Looks like I need to contact technical support at our isp to find out what's going on.
Thank you again for trying to help me out - Rukbat and Gayle Lyne. It is much appreciated. I'm happy I found this forum and joined.

I was writing before yours showed. I saw that and deliberated too. Can't hurt. And is one using 2.4 and the other on 5ghz? Distance? Too many unknowns. Start from scratch.

Happy days!

Is it your router? ISP? Might want to upgrade it it it's firmware too. If couple years old vendors may not be issuing firmware upgrades.

Also, storms can cause problems even if it and modem are on uninterruptible power, which is pretty much essential. Even your cable signal can carry too much.

In some cases the box feeding your house or neighborhood is at fault.

I keep a spare modem and router just in case. Can't function without and did have storm knock them out. While on UPS. Even cable was going through, filtered and surge protected.

A router should have a log though what it will show? Your ISP can log into your modem and see any errors.

There are some handy apps for monitoring and diagnosing wifi and internet.

Your router vendor ought to have an Android app or use the laptop and login via web interface (best).

You might have channel interference from nearby routers. And changing channels helps.

Do you always scratch an itch with a sledge hammer? Start with a light scratching.

I've been doing this too long (since 802.11 came out) to reboot an obviously working router. And distance? That would affect whether the phone connected to the router, not whether the router connected the particular device to the internet.

One logical step at a time.

It worked. That's all that matters.

Playing 20 questions for...
______

In the last year I've had instances that i didn't before, trouble connecting to the internet even though it connects to WiFi.

And adding mix of Surface and Mac laptop, variety of Apple phones and tablets along with Samsung, it seemed like too much chatter and got worse with the Microsoft laptop was addd. Pure speculation.

Yet rebooting modem and router calmed it down.
