S9 - One Drop, One Cracked Screen

The reality is glass is relatively fragile. We made a choice to buy a phone that is mostly glass.

That said, there is no need for judgements. How the OP chooses to deal with his friends and whether or not he chooses to use a case is his business.

It is a glass phone! When I know I'm getting a phone, I order the UAG case first, then the phone. That way my phone goes from box to case. On the other hand, my boy dropped his Note 8 that was in a Spigen case from the bumper of an escalade and it was totally shattered.

Not for nothing my Moto Z Force with ShatterShield has a truly unbreakable screen that hammer blows will not break. I've dropped it many times without worry or any damage.

My buddy dropped my phone 3 days after I got it. About a 4 ft fall onto a black top. Had a Spigen case on it.

Cracked the screen.

No insurance - FML.

I dropped my old HTC 10 plenty of times over 2 years, and never one scratch or minor crack.

What Spigen case you used?

What do you think of the Otterbox Symetry case? Its raised at the top and bottom so when I put it face down no part of the glass touches the surface. So I feel like if its dropped and hits the ground the glass won't make contact. (I'm not going to try it though). I'm debating whether to buy a screen protector. Many of them don't hold up well on the edges when having to take off and on the phone case.

I gave had my 9+ for 4 weeksI have not droped the phone which is kept in robust case but 2 days ago noted a hair line crack half way down on the left hand side which rapidly spread up znd down the sceen and now another has started then i spoke with 2 other people who have the same problem
So i wonder if there is a design fault

It is probable that your case is putting pressure on it in a bad spot especially if you sit on it. Is it a cheap case?

People always do this. Their device gets dropped and breaks and they claim its built horribly. There's so many factors that go into this. But most notable is it's a glass phone with a curved screen. Of course if you drop the phone it's more prone to breaking then a plastic or metal device.

That's why I dont let people hold my phone. If they drop it and it breaks are they going to pay for it. Probably not. Sorry to hear your phone broke though. But anything can break when dropped.

Agreed. No, you can't play with my phone. I don't care how well behaved your kids are, they are not touching my phone.
You break my phone, you pay for it. This is not up for debate.

Yes the curved display makes it more vulnerable to cracking when it’s dropped. That coupled with the fact that it’s near impossible to fit a glass screen protector on these phones means that they are at high risk of breaking.

Therefore you really need insurance. I think if you are investing in an expensive phone you should have insurance anyway but when the screen is this fragile get insurance!!!

The only phone of mine that ever broke was my S7 edge. I personally did not brake it but I sent it away to sell it (site like swapa) and sometime after it left me and it reaching the company the screen got broken. Luckily for me I had insurance so I could get the device replaced.

It's all about solving the problem in advance by being proactive. I see people(usually women)carry their phone around like it's part of their hand, and then wonder why they drop it so often. I've owned hand held phones since sometime in the late 90's(I think) and I've dropped a phone like 4 times since. Why? When I'm sitting I use the phone over the table, or whatever is around me. If I carry the phone it goes in my bag.(Kinda like a shaving accessory bag) Problem solved before it ever occurs. I don't think I've ever put my phone in my pocket. I do have a screen protector and case bought before I leave the area of the store, or if waiting for the phone by mail I pick out and order the protector and case a few days before I order the phone.

1) don't let others touch or handle your phone

2) don't drop your phone

I have a UAG case on my Samsung S8 from the day I brought it home. I noticed after a month the back glass, under the case was cracked. About 3 months in the phone fell from my bathroom counter into the garbage can, hitting the edge of the rubber can on the two foot drop, cracking the front screens edge.

As much as I would like to think "don't drop it" is the answer, it's not practical in the real world and I don't think there's a quality care that protects the phone without interfering with the edge technology.

I hate the curved screen and won't buy another one. I buy phones for screen and photo quality, personalization and durability. Clearly you'll have to compromise something in the final decision. I'll no longer take durability so lightly and all the phones, with user training, can take excellent pictures and have decent screen quality.

I have a Mous case and Whitestone Dome screen protector on my S9+. I've dropped it a handful of times without getting a scratch on it. If you get your screen fixed (and in all honesty, your friend should step up and make it right) maybe use a more protective combination and don't let your friend get his hands on it again.
