Today, in bright sun light the screen was black. At home , in a dark room I could see very faint text and was able to open settings. There the brightness was about 70%. I touched it to change the setting and instantly the screen was fully lit.

Is there something wrong with this phone?

Autobrightness in Android nowadays isn't like autobrightness on any other OS. As you make adjustments to the brightness, the phone remembers what you chose and applies those same settings in the future. It has to learn you before it will set it the way you want.

I had never set the brightness and auto us on. In the car, at first it was fine. I put it down to drive, and when I picked it up the screen was black.

That's what I'm saying. You have to 'train' it for your preferences. Auto does not automatically adjust the brightness like you might be used to.
