S9+ Screen turns when red LED is blocked?

Since I got my S9+, I have been occasionally confused to find my screen on and my icons dragged around or deleted, or random apps loading. In addition, I have watches my phone's screen turn on sometimes when I put it on my bedside table at night.

I recently figured out how to reproduce these annoyances, but I can't figure out how to prevent it. When plugged in and locked (screen off) a red LED comes on, indicating that the phone is charging. If I hover my finger over that LED (or if another object does the same), the phone wakes up. This is extremely annoying. My Droid Turbo used to do something similar, but that was actually useful because it was sensitive to movement (not static objects), had a useful range (~20 cm, rather than 1 cm like this one), and it would simply display the time and any notifications, not wake the phone up and unlock it with Smart Lock.

I would like to know how to disable this "feature." If I hit the lock button to turn my screen off, it should stay off until I hit that button again.

Thanks!

Sounds like you triggering the proximity sensor?

Probably! So, why does that wake the phone up? Doesn't it usually turn the screen off? Is there a way to disable when I'm not using the phone (I don't mind it triggering when I'm calling someone, for example, so I don't hit buttons with my face). Thanks!

Hi, yeah usually for calls , but check make sure lift to wake not enable or tap to wake.

Yeah, lift to wake is off. I've searched all over my settings trying to find something relevant. Pontiac005 mentioned malware. That seems unlikely, but do you think it's possible? I use an antivirus, but I've heard most mobile security is pretty weak. (Also, it seems cars are popular here haha)

Hahaha yeah looks like it
I don't think it's malware at this point , I don't recommend a antivirus on phones as it could cause performance issue and possibly others , as long as your up to date on security and OS update your going be fine . Maybe look in settings of biometrics see if you have Iris on to wake up when screen locked?

Ah hah! I found it. It was coming from the Gravity Gestures app. In retrospect, that should have been an obvious culprit, but I only use it for the chop and twist motions (like my Turbo used to do natively - obviously, I miss that phone). I forgot it had other settings/options. Thank you so much for taking the time to help! You set me on the right track.

Your welcome , glad you found it
Can you use that gesture app to turn flashlight ?

That's what I use it for most often. A chopping motion turns the flashlight on even when the phone is locked and screen off. It's a brilliant feature (accidental pun)!

Nice , I'll maybe give it a try

Hahaha , or hitting someone with the gesture movement lol, I watched one time a person with a Droid trying some Kung Fu stuff trying to get the flashlight on
Just watch out for all those other settings :-P
