S9 text Notifications

So I upgraded to the S9 from S8 and set all my individual text message notification sounds. The problem is, when I delete the text string and I receive a new text from that same person, the notification defaults to the "stock" setting. How do I correct this?

The factory one.

Yes. That's how it is now. It's a thread based setting not a contact based one. The old Samsung implementation was changed in Oreo, so Samsung followed how Google implemented it on their own messaging app.

I've resorted to keeping messages to avoid this problem.

They changed as Chan said. Try Textra. You can individualize notification sounds by person or app, as well as colors and some other features.
