So I held off from buying the first stock because with a lot of items the first released ones can have problems... The latest N5s come in on 11th and I want to get it before christmas/soon as I can. I've been pretty desperate to get this phone. Are there any big problems that Google need to fix first though?

I honestly do no think there was any widespread problems. I personally received a flawless unit (aside from reverse usb). I know on some phones the USB charging port was upside down, which if you do not use a dock is irrelevant. Some also had lose power buttons, but was very isolated.

I would say you are safe to order.

Foolish question... The USB was supposed to be fat side to the back? I thought it was just a design flaw.

With any device, you could potentially have issues at any time during production. I get what you're saying for the most part, I for one would NEVER buy a brand new video game console because they always have major bugs. But with phones, it's not the same. I bought a Galaxy S3 months after it was announced, and my USB port stopped working within a few months and I had never abused it. I got my N5 last thursday and haven't had any hardware or software issues whatsoever.

I've got a launch unit and it is perfect. I think you are more than good to go ahead and order.

There is only one way to insert that cable - wide side towards the screen.
Without breaking the port, you can't really insert it in the other way

What exactly is reverse USB? I know my Samsung Galaxy S3 to me the USB plug was upside down because on both my HTC EVO 4G and EVO 4G LTE (and now my Nexus 5) in comparison... I felt with the Samsung device it was "Reverse" or upside down..... but I've seen people state the N5 is reverse USB... I don't use a dock so maybe that is it? Now that I have my wireless chargers I don't even use the USB anymore.... It's nice to just set it down on that charging pad and let it go....

They are all like that. I have various Nexus devices and they are not always the same, even with the same manufacturer.

Upside down is actually the correct way (flat side on the bottom). Most are flat side on top, which seems like upside down haha

I think everybody understands that (at least, for anybody who has been charging their phone with the wall charger for the past month). I think the point the others are making is that this seems like a design flaw, since you have to kind of unnaturally twist the charging cable to plug it in. It makes more common sense to have the wide side toward the back of the phone. It's really a minor thing though.

To answer the OP, I'd say go for it whenever you have the money to do it. I got two phones (one for me, one for the wife) the day they came out, and they've both been perfect. I see no reason to hold off, as long as you have the money.

good thread, i was hesitant to order too. went ahead and did. site said ship date 12/11, to my surprise it shipped like the next day. was trying to avoid the launch run but this unit seems fairly okay

You should be good now. I ordered mine on launch day. The vibration don't work and the USB charger is backwards. But that all the problems I have. I just kept my device though.

I ordered mine last week. The only hardware problem I have found is that my volume rockers rattle. Don't think its worth the hassle to return.

Pretty much all USB devices I've owned have had the wider side of the port towards the bottom of the devices, while the thinner side is towards the top. The only exception I've seen have been my 2 Nexus 7s (2012 and 2013) and my Nexus 5. To most people they would see the Nexus USB ports as "backwards".

I personally received a flawless Nexus 5 that I put on order at the ten minutes after Play Store when live with the N5 the first day.

Thanks.. I was just wondering.... We just had different devices... I can't remember what the Nexus 1 was... I just know both HTC Devices and the N5 are all the same orientation and to me my GS3 was backwards... Even after nearly a year with the GS3 I never got use to the way it was set... The Nexus 5 is a wonderful device though....

Got a 32Gb N5 about a week ago and its got no issues at all, no rattles, dead pixels, etc.
It's nicer to use and takes a better photo than the HTC One it's replacing. The N5 will be nearly perfect when I get the 4.4.2 update (the HTC is superior when it comes to sound).

Mine is from launch and it's perfect (white 32gb). I agree with everyone, if you can, just go ahead and get it. There's always a chance something might be wrong but the odds are probably that it will be fine.
